While the Jaguars control the overall record, the Hawks are starting to narrow down that gap with another win over their crosstown rival.
Here are some of the names that were impressive from Friday:
Larmie may only be a sophomore but the skillset he showed on friday was veteran like. He is quick in his cuts, shows good burst and knows how to use patience when reading his blocks. Rushing for 122 yards he was a huge reason why the Hawks were successful late in the game. Larmie rushed and caught a touchdown both at key times within the game. The young back shows a lot of potential and should continue to be a huge impact for the Hawks this season.
Highlights
Connor Kayser
Connor Kayser
Kayser was active all over the field against the Jaguars. The UNI commit showed versatility, whether it was rushing for two touchdowns as a wildcat QB or having 7.5 tackles while lining up at middle backer or off the edge. Kayser has a motor that is tough to stop once he gets going and it is fun to watch him fly around. Look for him to continue being an impact on both sides of the ball this season.
Devon Akers
Devon Akers
Many knew going into this game Akers would be a huge target to stop. He lived up to those expectations by being the lanky big play receiver. The game winning two point conversion may be the highlight but Akers still had a productive night nonetheless. Three catches for 90 yards shows Akers can stretch and stress defenses out with his length and catch radius.
Evan Irlmeier
Evan Irlmeier
While Akers may have had a lot of the attention, teams are going to soon figure out that Irlmeier is just as dangerous, perhaps even a little more due to how shifty and precise he is. Irlmeier can find the holes within defenses and can create seperation like no other. Not to mention he is a willing pass catcher that finished the night with 8 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown. The sturdy slot receiver will only get more attention as the season progresses.
Dylan Dougherty
Dylan Dougherty
Dougherty is perhaps the most complete player on the Hawks defense. He is a physical, athletic and smart safety who anchors the backend. He shows good tempo when pulling his trigger, has sneaky speed and understands angles when coming down to make a play. He finished the night with 11.5 tackles (7 solo).
While the numbers weren’t eye popping for Smith, the efficiency and skill was. He tossed for 118 yards and three touchdowns but also added one on the ground. Smith has a tremendous arm and made some very clutch throws. The vision and poise he plays with is like no other and shows why he is one of the best QBs in the state. Smith will only progress as the season goes on.
Highlights
Elijah Porter
Elijah Porter
Porter was perhaps the best athlete on the field friday. A UNI commit as well, Porter showed why he’ll be a huge addition to the Panthers offense in the near future. He possess good speed, acceleration and isn’t scared to deliver contact. The senior back was primed to be the bellcow of this offense and after rushing for 210 yards while adding a score he showed the workload is nothing that’ll phase him.
Max Snyder
Max Snyder
Snyder is a playmaker and it is simple as that! The Senior receiver had six receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to take the top of off secondaries was on display and he showed he isn’t afraid to make an impact in the run game as a blocker. Snyder has the ability to flip from the slot to outside which can be a problem with how well he sets up defenders. He has soft hands, good change of direction and is just a tough gritty football player you’d love to have on your team.
While Schutty wasn’t utilized as much as you’d think, he still flashed a lot of versatility and athleticism. Lining up at both defensive end and flex- tight end, he was an impact on both sides of the ball. He piled up four tackles and only had one reception but it happened to be at a crucial point of the game and was a touchdown at that. He did a lot of his work in the run game by being a dominant blocker who would wipe guys out of the play. There were even a few times he was able to get past the Hawks defense as a route runner but just wasn’t targeted.
Highlights
Chase Kluver
Chase Kluver
Now Kluver may be the backup QB but he was very impactful and showed he can have a future as a safety. Pilling up 13 tackles (12 solo) and an interception, Kluver was flying all around the field for the Jags. The physicality he brings is not what you’d expect out of a QB. He has a big frame, exceptional athleticism and showed he can range the field as a deep safety.
