Week 1 featured some monster performances all across the state of Iowa with several players posting statement games right off the bat! Here are five prospects from around the state that had big time games in their season openers.
Dowling Catholic junior RB Rashawd Davis Rashawd Davis 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Dowling Catholic | 2025 State IA put on a show in the season opener against Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Rashawd toted the rock 22 times for 144 rushing yards with four touchdowns. He also showed off just how electric of a player he is with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. I’ve only had the chance to see a few highlights from Saturday’s game, but from what I’ve seen, Rashawd displayed great vision and the ability to find open lanes. He runs with excellent balance and can shift directions when he identifies a lane with ease. Strong runner— Davis is very tough to tackle one-on-one and will even dish out some punishment if he needs to. Huge season coming up for the talented junior!
Vincenzo Gianforte
Vincenzo Gianforte
Despite being on the losing end of the mentioned Dowling Catholic-CR Kennedy bout, junior QB Vincenzo Gianforte still put up a great performance. Vincenzo ended the night 22 for 39 on passing attempts for 269 yards and three touchdowns. The thing that stood out the most about Gianforte’s game is his mobility and ability to evade defenders in the pocket. He’s a slippery QB who can maneuver his way through traffic while keeping his eyes downfield looking for open options. Vincenzo also displays nice ball placement on his throws, really to all levels of the field, but he had an especially impressive deep pass where he put it only where his receiver could get it. Now even more experienced, Vincenzo looks calm and poised as he leads the offense. He is a good-looking prospect with a very high ceiling! Schools like Waldorf, Northern Iowa, Penn, Princeton, and other teams have expressed interest.
Junior RB Bode Higgins Bode Higgins 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Spirit Lake | 2025 State IA played a huge part in Spirit Lake’s Week 1 win with his offensive and defensive efforts. Bode rushed for 118 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns; defensively, he racked up seven tackles and two tackles for loss. At 6’0″ and 200 pounds, he has a strong, compact frame that can do a lot of damage regardless of what side of the ball he’s on. As a runner, Higgins isn’t necessarily a burner with his speed, but he does a very consistent job of picking up yardage in large chunks with his great vision and patience. He’s a very smooth downhill runner who allows his blocks to set up in front of him and is very good at following those blocks. At LB, he does a great job flowing to the ball and can disengage from his blocks to chase down the ball carrier. Under the radar prospect to jump on QUICKLY!!!
If you’re looking for a towering outside receiver who can dominate at the high point, Bondurant Farrar’s Reed Pfaltzgraff Reed Pfaltzgraff 6'3" | 165 lbs | WR Bondurant-Farrar | 2024 IA is your guy. Even though the Blue Jays did suffer a tough 4-point loss, Reed still put on a show and gave the BF faithful several flashes of what to expect this season. He ended the game with six receptions for 203 receiving yards and got in for two scores. Reed’s basketball background shines on the gridiron with how effortlessly he goes up and makes receptions over defenders. Pfaltzgraf’s ability to create after the catch was very impressive to watch on tape, as he’s very physical and uses his big frame to shake off smaller defenders. Very underrated route runner with quick feet and the ability to create separation and expose soft zones. Stock riser!
Santana Miller Santana Miller 6'2" | LB Iowa City | 2024 IA
Santana Miller Santana Miller 6'2" | LB Iowa City | 2024 IA
Physical, physical, physical. That was my main takeaway after watching Iowa City West LB Santana Miller Santana Miller 6'2" | LB Iowa City | 2024 IA . His motor is just non-stop regardless of what he’s asked to do, ending the game with 11 tackles, 2 TFLs, a blocked kick, and a 52-yard pick-six. When attacking downhill, Santana uses explosive hands and his power to blow past blockers and create issues in the backfield. At 6’0″ and 210 pounds, Santana is a sure tackler who can leave a mark when he gets to the ball carrier. Miller also looked solid in coverage, showing he has the range and quickness to defend receiving backs in the flats while coming from the middle linebacker spot. He is an underrated prospect with lots of potential!
