From the enthusiastic crowds, top notch players and the passion each school staff takes in making sure us media folks are having a great time, cannot wait to see the whole season play out. A few more standouts from Week 0 below:
Tristan Evans Tristan Evans 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Freedom | 2024 VA -Trujillo
Tristan Evans Tristan Evans 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Freedom | 2024 VA -Trujillo
All the reigning player of the year/All-American/State champion did in his first game was throw for 285 yards and 4 touchdowns not too shabby. Freedom made light work of the home team Coolidge (D.C) 48-0 on Saturday evening and Evans once again proved why he deserves more respect. The common knock on him is that he is surrounded by elite talent and he wouldn’t put up these numbers elsewhere. That is an inaccurate take and if you watch him play than you know he can make every throw and read, he also has a 4.1 GPA.

The John Lewis Lancers kicked of their season with an impressive shootout victory of visiting Park View 41-30. While offensively Coach Choates’s squad had many stars nobody shined more than senior running back Nicholas Adjei-Ababio. One of the lone returning all-district selections for the Lancers, Ababio carried the load this past Friday night with 24 carries 136 yards and 3 touchdowns. A great way for Lewis to kick off their 2023 campaign with a home week 0 win! Ababio’s talent cannot be ignored as he is a true workhorse running back who can also catch the ball out of the backfield.

While the Bruins season did not start off as planned as they were shutout at home, senior Andrew Perry Andrew Perry 6’3″ | 210 lbs | DL Forest Park Woodbridge Va | 2024 VA had himself a night. Racking up 7 solo tackles and 2 sacks, you can see why I have been high on his game for the past few months. You have to admire the fight in this young man, Mountain View is one of the top teams in Virginia and he refused to quit. I stand by what I said about him, the more he progresses his senior year, the better chances you are of seeing him play at the FBS level.

Trevor Moody
Trevor Moody
Have I told you I really like the Cardinals chances for 2023 yet? Short answer is yes over 100 times, but they have playmakers all over the field and senior Trevor Moody may be the latest. The basketball star for Gainesville had a great night with two touchdown receptions on and over 100 yards receiving. Moody caught screen pass and displayed his speed early as he pulled away from the Potomac defenders. He had 8 catches on the night giving Coach Bruton just another weapon on his high-power offense. Between Moody, Koven Smith Koven Smith 5’9″ | 180 lbs | ATH Gainesville | 2025 State VA and Aidan McClaferty, Gainesville could average 30 points per contest for the year.
