Throughout the month of July and into August, we are publishing well over 100 in-depth team previews to get you completely ready for the 2023 football season. This is something that began in 2021 and has continued to get bigger every single year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champions, to top contenders and plenty of dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A, all the way down to the addition of 8-man coverage this year with Class B and C. In this post, we take a look at the McLoud Redskins.

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: UR
Preseason Coaches Ranking: UR
The McLoud Redskins head into year number two under head coach Coleman Ramsey and after a 5-5 mark in 2022, they are hoping the 2023 season ends with a winning record and a trip to the playoffs. The Colmean Ramsey era began with back to back wins over Harrah and Bethel before a week three loss to Tecumseh right before district play. They would bounce back with a win over North Rock Creek but followed that up with back to back losses to Anadarko and Metro Christian. Two more losses to Kingfisher and Perkins-Tryon would keep the Redskins from the playoffs and they would end the season with a 5-5 record and a 3-4 mark in district play. The two losses to Anadarko and Kingfisher were the critical nes as they came by a combined eight points. The ball bounces a different way and the Redskins are back in the playoffs. That is the goal as we look ahead to the 2023 football season but this is going to be a relatively young team that might go through some growing pains early but it should pay off late in the season.
Only nine starters return for the Redskins as they have to replace the majority of starters from last season. Five starters are back on the offensive side of the ball but one of the biggest question marks will be up front along the line of scrimmage as the Redskins have some big names to replace on the offensive line. Four starters are back on the defensive side of the ball and it’s more of the same story there as there are a lot of unknowns on that side of the ball but this is a team that definitely has some talent, they just have to gain that confidence and experience of playing meaningful snaps against strong competition. A big reason we like McLoud to potentially make it to the playoffs is the district itself. On paper, Perkins-Tryon appears to be the favorite as they return almost everyone. Metro made it to the title game but they have to replace a lot. It seems that the district is pretty wide open and could be for the taking. There will once again be some critical games in the district slate that the Redskins have to win and if they do that, they’ll be in a good position when November rolls around.

Players To Watch
The first player to watch for McLoud is actually a newcomer in 2025 standout Shaun Hill Shaun Hill 6’1″ | 185 lbs | ATH McLoud | 2025 State OK who moved to McLoud from Tecumseh. Hill actually helped the Savages beat McLoud last year in the regular season and is a very intriguing athlete to watch on the football field. We featured Hill earlier this year during our “Friday Film Review” series and he really stood out as a wide receiver. The Redskins are going to have a few weapons on that side of the ball so another area that Hill can help them is his overall athleticism. Tecumseh used him all over the place on offense and that could be something that McLoud adopts this season and uses Hill as their X-Factor on the offensive side of the ball.
Highlights
Another McLoud standout is 2026 Zaylun Matlock Zaylun Matlock 5’10” | ATH McLoud | 2026 State OK and it doesn’t matter where he lines up on the field, he’s usually making plays. Just like Hill, we covered Matlock earlier this year during our “Friday Film Review” series and the thing that really stood out was his versatility. He was an impact player on offense, defense and in the special teams department. It’s hard not to expect him to take the next step this season when you consider what he did as a freshman. He finished with over 30 catches for over 600 yards and four touchdowns. He also had four interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. We think that Matlock, combined with Hill, is going to give McLoud several really good options at overall playmaking on offense.

2023 Schedule/Games To Circle
Sept. 1 – AT Harrah
Sept. 8 – AT Bethel
Sept. 15 – Tecumseh
Sept. 22 – North Rock Creek
Sept. 29 – AT Anadarko
– The first match-up against last year’s playoff teams comes in week five when the Redskins travel to face Anadarko. This was the closest loss on McLoud’s schedule last year after losing 21-20. The ball bounces the other way and the Redskins might find themselves in the playoffs instead of home in November. This game also kicks off a five-week stretch where they face the four playoff teams from last season and the four district opponents that beat McLoud in 2022. The Redskins can set the tone for how the next five weeks will go with a big win on the road here.
Oct. 6 – Metro Christian
Oct. 12 – Mannford
Oct. 19 – AT Kingfisher
Oct. 27 – AT Perkins-Tryon
– By the time week nine rolls around and the Redskins hit the road again for a district contest with Perkins-Tryon, it is likely that they will know exactly what they need to do in order to make it to the playoffs. Coming into this season, it looks like Perkins-Tryon might be the favorite to capture the district crown. If things fall into place for the Redskins, they might be in a head to head contest for the district championship in week nine. The Demons got the best of McLoud last season and are looking to lock up the district title. McLoud could either play spoiler, or help their playoff chances.
Nov. 3 – Mount Saint Mary
Notable
McLoud is hungry for sustained football success and that’s what it looks like they are building towards with several young classes that have some top talent that we’ll be keeping an eye on moving forward. The Redskins made the playoffs in 2020 but it has been a while since they experienced success when they got there. It’s been nearly two decades since the last playoff win and that was in the 2006 first round. The Redskins have had just two playoff wins in school history and they’ve never made it out of the quarterfinal round. As we mentioned earlier, we think this district is going to be very competitive but at the end of the day it looks wide open. The Redskins could certainly find themselves back in the playoffs and once they get there, they’ll be matched up with a team from arguably the toughest district in Class 3A. But they just need a ticket to the dance and what happens after that will be fun to watch.
