Desert Edge @ Centennial
Desert Edge’s explosive offense will face off against one of the highest talked about defenses last year at Centennial. Hezekiah Millender Hezekiah Millender 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Desert Edge | 2025 GA will get a shot to test himself against a fast, aggressive centennial D, and vice versa. Desert Edge comes off an 8-4 season which includes a close 45-42 playoff loss against Higley. Centennial was an open division playoff team a year ago, finishing 2022 with an 8-3 record and a 47-27 playoff loss at Chandler. It should be a great one this Friday in the west valley, as these two powerhouses project to put up a dog fight type of atmosphere.
Saguaro @ ALA-Queen Creek
This one is an interesting matchup, as there are a lot of unknows from both teams for the first time in a long time. Saguaro enters the year with a new HC Zak Hill, a new QB Mason Bray Mason Bray 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2024 State AZ (after top recruit Hype grand left the program), and kind of seem like an underdog for the first time since I’ve covered high school football. However, you can’t doubt these guys given how explosive they are all across the board. ALAQC gets bumped up to 6A after being drastically impressive at 4A and 5A the past two years, and also get a solid QB Enoch Watson Enoch Watson 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB ALA Queen Creek | 2024 State AZ from Coconino. Watson and ALAQC will be tested right off the bat against one of the state’s best programs, and I’m very interested to see how this one shakes out.
Hamilton @ Liberty
Hamilton and Liberty square off this Friday, and you get the feeling that this might not be the only time these two matchup together in 2023. Both are high powered from top to bottom and look like two of the best teams in the state, and are almost sure open division playoff teams. Navi Bruzon Navi Bruzon 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Liberty | 2024 State AZ continues to light it up and impress each week despite having that “undersized” claim, which is ridiculous and he continues to prove it. Hamilton’s Beckham Pellant Beckham Pellant 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Hamilton | 2024 State AZ will also have a big opportunity to go up against a tough defense as he’ll look to put up points against a fly-around Liberty D.
Paradise Honors @ Mohave
Both teams enters this contest 1-0 after two dominant wins during week 1. PAradise Honors was able to secure a 35-14 win over Thatcher, while Mohave was able to hang up 75 points to beat up Bourgade catholic 75-6. Gage Baker Gage Baker 6'1" | 160 lbs | QB Paradise Honors | 2024 State AZ is going to have another solid test against a stout Mohave defense that only gave up 6 points in week 1, especially with a guy like Jonathan Williams Jonathan Williams 6'1" | 220 lbs | ATH Mohave | 2024 State AZ roaming the field on D. Mohave played a super physical game last week, showing off that mean streak. Paradise Honors continues to be that gunslinger, score on command type of team as well, so all signs point to this one being a battle.
