Smith Stadium this past Saturday as three different teams from within the Bluegrass State kicked off their season in the annual Rafferty’s Bowl. In the first contest of the event, Boyle County High School (1-0) opened up their season against Gibson Southern High School (0-1), blasting the Titans on both sides of the ball en route to a 36-6 victory in Bowling Green.
Game Recap
Boyle County was unstoppable on both sides of the ball from start to finish, muscling their way into the endzone early on in the first quarter thanks to an 80-yard touchdown run to give the Rebels a 7-0 advantage over the Titans. Gibson Southern struggled with offensive production all throughout the game as Boyle County’s defense bullied the Titans’ offensive line, consistently pressured the quarterback and came away with several interceptions. Boyle County quickly extended their lead to 21-0 thanks to a few solid playmakers on the Rebels’ roster. By the end of the first half, the Rebels led the Titans 29-6. The second half was more quiet as both teams made necessary defensive adjustments. The Rebels found the endzone one more time in the second half and kept the Titans’ offense out of the endzone despite Gibson Southern being within solid scoring position at several points in the second half. Boyle County went on to defeat Gibson Southern 36-6 to start their season 1-0. The Rebels will be back in action for week two as they face off against Lexington Christian Academy on Saturday.
Top Performers (Boyle County)
Claiming the first place spot on my list of top performers is junior Montavin Quisenberry Montavin Quisenberry 5'9" | 160 lbs | ATH Boyle County | 2025 State KY , a 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete that made his presence known on both sides of the ball in the first game of the event, earning the Rafferty’s Bowl offensive MVP award.
In addition to outstanding size, speed and versatility, Quisenberry impressed me with his explosiveness and electric speed in the backfield, overwhelming the Titans as both a wide receiver and a defensive back. Quisenberry caught my attention offensively on two seperate plays, muscling into the endzone from three yards out as well as hauling in a 36-yard touchdown pass. On the other side of the ball, Quisenberry was relentless, showing off his ability to consistently pick off the quarterback and make commanding stops. Quisenberry will definitely be worth keeping an eye on throughout this season.
Another high-level player on Boyle County’s roster that caught my attention was senior Sage Dawson Sage Dawson 5'11" | 150 lbs | ATH Boyle County | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-0, 160-pound quarterback that had no trouble blasting Gibson Southern in the air during the week one matchup. What I liked about Dawson was his excellent arm strength and pin-point accurate passing, quickly overwhelming the Titans’ defense with his quick execution off the snap and ability to hit his receivers in stride anywhere on the field. I was additionally impressed with Dawson’s composure under pressure and ability to adapt to different situations. After proving he’s ready to compete in the Rebels’ first contest, Dawson is certainly a player to watch out for as the season progresses.
I was additionally impressed with junior Brock Driver Brock Driver 6'3" | 215 lbs | LB Boyle County | 2025 State KY , a 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker that consistently made a difference due to his versatility, physical edge and defensive playmaking ability. Driver created an assortment of issues for Gibson Southern’s offense throughout four quarters. On top of excellent size, speed and athleticism, what made Driver so efficient was his defensive awareness, ability to target the ball carrier and his ability to force disorganization among the opposing offense. Driver was consistently blasting the Titans’ offensive line and applying heavy defensive pressure on the quarterback, making several significant stops. Driver was a huge gamechanger on the defensive side of the ball and should not be slept on this season.
