I have found that there are several undervalued and possibly even unheard-of prospects down south. Here are a few underrated guys from the southeast portion of the state that college coaches across all levels should take a long, hard look at.
Antonio Barron – 2024 – ATH – Vidalia
Barron is a versatile, speedy prospect with a bright future on the offensive side of the ball. Barron is the Swiss army knife for Vidalia, lining up at QB, RB, WR, and even handles some punting duties. Barron is a noticeably fluid athlete with top-end speed. He showcases excellent elusiveness both around the line of scrimmage and while making his way through running lanes downfield. For a thinner RB, he handles himself well between the tackles and even shows the ability to shrug off tackling attempts while maintaining balance. He is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield, showing WR-like ability to run routes and make plays in the downfield passing game. With his make-miss ability and natural pass-catching skills, a move to WR might be the easiest projection for Barron. However, with the ability to navigate between the tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield, I believe Barron makes for an intriguing 3rd down option out of the backfield. Thanks to his speed, I project Barron as a D1-caliber offensive playmaker.
Creighton Horst – 2024 – LB – Statesboro
Horst is a stout, old-school MLB prospect coming off a productive 2022 season. At 6’1 230, he is an incredibly solid factor in the middle of the defense. He is big and physical enough to attack and shed off blockers. At times, he can even knock offensive linemen off balance when he strikes. Horst plays with good pad level and strikes from a low position which allows him to lift runners off the turf and drive them to the ground. He is efficient as a blocker, taking good angles to the football and has enough straight-line speed to close the gap quickly. As you could imagine, he is an authority figure in the gaps and around the line of scrimmage as he doesn’t get blown off the ball and can absorb contact from the RBs well. Horst should fit in nicely at a lower-level school where he can contribute early and often. He will be a sneaky good get for somebody on signing day.
Kendre Standley – 2024 – DB – Ware County
Standley is a multi-level playmaker on defense. Even with a highly productive 2022 season in the rearview, I believe his best football is still ahead of him. He is a long 6’0 180 with imposing length. He is more of a strider than he is a twitchy athlete, but he plays with good instincts, discipline, and balance which gives him good game speed. Even without being a super quick-footed prospect, he can cover receivers well and breaks on the ball naturally. He is certainly aware of his length and uses his long arms to knock the ball away from receivers. He does a good job of playing through the hands of the wideout and seems to avoid penalties. Stanley is a good tackler with solid pursuit skills and a large tackling radius. He eats up a lot of grass with his long strides and can engulf ball carriers with his long arms. Stanley is a tweener who should play closer to the line of scrimmage. His proven production as a tackler and ability to play against bigger receivers makes him an ideal Nickel prospect. He has D1 measurables and could be on the verge of a recruiting uptick.
Jaylen Hampton Jaylen Hampton 6'2" | 185 lbs | WR New Hampstead | 2024 State GA – 2024 – WR – New Hampstead
Hampton has a projectable size and speed combination that should absolutely put him on the radar for FBS programs. For a bigger guy at 6’2 190, he is extremely solid after the catch, showing the ability to weave in and out of running lanes and break away from defenders with his long strides. He shows good short-area explosion as well, especially at the top of his routes. Hampton’s ability to run in-breaking routes gives him tremendous value at the next level as a large target in the middle of the defense. He has a large catch radius and can use his frame to shield off defenders from the ball. He also has fantastic body control, frequently making grabs while falling to the turf. Hampton has natural hands, catching the ball away from his body and never losing stride with the ball in his hand. Hampton is still a little raw and becoming more refined as a mover, but as I mentioned before, he has an intriguing blend of size and speed. There is FBS and possibly P5 upside here.
Brandon McDonald Brandon McDonald 5'10" | 175 lbs | DB Richmond Hill | 2025 GA – 2025 – DB – Richmond Hills
McDonald is a productive DB prospect who can put himself on the map with another productive season in 2023. McDonald spends most of his time outside at CB. While he doesn’t check the prototypical size and length for a D1 corner, he plays a feisty, physical brand of football. He is not afraid to get right in the grill of WRs both at the line and at the top of their routes, which allows him to disrupt routes and timing for the receiver. He has decent ball skills and does an excellent job of playing through the hands of the receiver to knock the ball to the turf. McDonald isn’t a burner, but he has the athleticism to flip his hips and run as well as come downhill to strike. From the look of it, his stout 5’10 175 frame gives him the look of a legit nickel prospect. Both his ability and willingness to blow up blockers and ball carriers make him an even better fit at that spot. McDonald could very well be a productive corner. However, a move to nickel could be a better fit for his abilities. Regardless, McDonald could hold his own at the D1 level both athletically and physically.
