IOWA CITY, Iowa – Believe it or not, high school football practice officially kicks off on Monday. The first games are less than a month away.
To get us prepared, we’re listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we’ve covered at the links above.
We’re digging in on defense. Here are the Class 2A defensive backs:
Graham Eben Graham Eben 6'1" | 195 lbs | RB Central Lyon Rock Rapids | 2024 State IA , ’24, Central Lyon-George/Little Rock – Eben (6-1, 190) verbally committed to a preferred walk-on opportunity at Iowa this summer ahead of reported scholarship offers from North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Eastern Illinois, South Dakota and others. He intercepted four passes during the Lions’ march to a state championship in ’22. He averaged 16.1 yards on 10 punt returns with two touchdowns. He looks like a versatile safety on his junior highlight reel. He runs and reacts well, and shows signs of being physical.
Jaxon Paulsrud Jaxon Paulsrud 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Cherokee | 2026 State IA , ’26, Cherokee – The 6-0, 180-pound Paulsrud picked off three passes as a freshman last fall. He also contributed 40 solo tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Throw in his two kick returns for touchdowns, seven rushing scores and a receiving TD, and you understand the impact of the first-team all-district pick. When viewing his ninth-grade highlights, you witness a player that stands out as one heck of a player. He lines up at receiver, running back, quarterback and all over the defense.
Quinn Street Quinn Street 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Osage | 2026 State IA , ’26, Osage – Like Paulsrud, Street performed beyond his years as a ninth-grader in ’22. He threw a 52-yard touchdown on his only pass of the season, returned a kick 82 yards for a TD and brought back his lone interception 50 yards for a score. He delivered 43 solo tackles among his 48.5 total stops. His freshman highlight reel includes the long scoring plays. He plays the run well from the secondary.
Tyler Drefke Tyler Drefke 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Des Moines Christian | 2026 State IA , ’26, Des Moines Christian – Drefke joins Street and Paulsrud in giving the ’26 Class a strong presence on this list. Drefke (6-0, 180) racked up 46.0 tackles (24 solo, 2.0 for loss) as a ninth-grader. He also contributed on offense and special teams. His freshman highlights bring us an athlete that closes quickly in pursuit. He reads and reacts well, and does a nice job getting off of blocks.
Cory Jones Cory Jones 6'3" | 170 lbs | DB Central Lee | 2024 IA , ’24, Central Lee – Jones collected five interceptions as a junior last season. He also served as the team’s quarterback, rushing for three touchdowns and catching four passes for 77 yards. His Hudl highlight page contains individual game videos. They show him chipping in all around the field. He succeeds with athleticism and speed. He also has a good feel for the game.
Dylan Henry, ’24, Mid-Prairie – The highlights on Henry’s Hudl page are limited but do give us a sense of who he is as a player. Included are two of his three interceptions from last season. He was well positioned in both instances and appeared to recognize the plays before the snap. He also helped out on offense and special teams for the Golden Hawks.
Ethan Detemmerman, ’24, Oelwein – Detemmerman (5-9, 225) excelled in three phases last season for Huskies, as you can see while watching his junior highlights. He rushed for three touchdowns, caught two TDS and averaged 15.5 yards on 31 kick returns. On defense, he intercepted three passes. He’s a good athlete that plays all out. Those guys tend to deliver.
