The Surf City Passing Tournament and Lineman Competition is Saturday at Huntington Beach High. 15 Southern California schools and one Arizona school will compete.
Let’s take a look at the teams competing in one of the last passing tournaments of the summer.
POOL C
SAN JACINTO
San Jacinto looked good at the Mission Viejo passing tournament two weeks ago and took Centennial to the end of the game. The player to watch for San Jacinto is Oregon commit Dillon Gresham Dillon Gresham 6'1" | 165 lbs | WR San Jacinto | 2024 State CA , who will be a matchup problem for cornerbacks all day.
WESTERN
I saw Western at the Villa Park passing event and they narrowly beat a very good San Clemente team. Anthony Luna is the quarterback for Western and will be one of the top senior passers in Orange County. Joshua Faulkner Joshua Faulkner 5'9" | 190 lbs | ATH Western | 2024 State CA is a two-way star for Western and Quimari Shemwell Quimari Shemwell 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Long Beach Poly | 2024 State CA is an underrated player with some offers.
EL TORO
El Toro is a bit of a mystery team with a low-profile on social media. Ben Armendariz transferred from Tustin last year and was the starting quarterback as a junior. Mekhi Mitchell is a two-way player who was a junior last season. El Toro returns a ton of talent of defense including Jaden Renick and Cody Lecompte.
MINGUS UNION
Mingus Union is the lone Arizona school competing on Saturday. They are already in Huntington Beach working out and preparing. Mario Camacho was a junior quarterback for Mingus last season. They ran the ball a ton last year and Seth Brueland is the returning running back with the most experience. Camacho also had four interceptions on defense last season and Max Leckington had a pick.
POOL D
AYALA
Ayala lost its star quarterback but has some returning starters back like receiver Drew Amico. Marquis Monroe Marquis Monroe 5'10" | 160 lbs | RB Ayala | 2024 State CA and Wyatt Summerford are returning All-League players on defense. Ayala is a young team with a few returning key players and it will be interesting to see how they fare in a tough Mountain West League.
TESORO
Tesoro competed at the Brave 8 Invitational two weeks ago against top teams like Bosco. Cash O’Byrne Cash O’Byrne 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Tesoro | 2025 CA is the junior starting quarterback for the Titans and his two offensive weapons will be running back Travis Wood Travis Wood 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB Tesoro | 2024 State CA and receiver Todd Nelson. Wood is committed to Air Force. Dalton Hurd is the linebacker who leads the defense.
SANTA ANA
Santa Ana competed at the Ocean View Tournament last week and is led by its senior quarterback Sergio Torres Sergio Torres 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Santa Ana | 2024 CA . Ignacio Marin is an outside backer who can come up and play defensive end if needed. Henry Hurtado is a junior had two interceptions last season. Santa Ana is another team that keeps a low profile on social media.
WESTMINSTER
Westminster had a 9-1 regular season last year and was one of the most improved programs in Orange County. The Lions have two good returning running backs in Ezekiel Cedillo and William Pardue. Brad Nguyen led the team in interceptions last season with three as a sophomore.
