2025 class coverage continues with a look at a very talented group of ATHs. These guys have proven to be versatile playmakers with massive upside at several different positions.
Kale Johnson Kale Johnson 6'3" | 215 lbs | ATH Papillion-La Vista | 2025 State NE | Papillion-La Vista | 6’3″ 205 lbs
Kale is set to be a key player on the Monarch’s defense in 2023. He’s an interesting prospect whose athleticism and frame could see him get looks at different positions. He played safety last season, where he tallied 66 tackles while displaying great sideline-to-sideline range. At SS, he showed that he can excel in coverage and step up in the box to defend the run. Kale has bulked up to 205 pounds this offseason, and looks like he will be playing linebacker this fall. Seeing him at the Battle 7v7 tournament, I would say he’s transitioning very well. He flows to the ball very well, and even from the safety position, he can get downhill quickly to sniff out screens and outside runs. Most of Kale’s playing time will be on defense, but having seen his receiving skills, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him making plays as a flex TE/WR.
Sam Souerdyke Sam Souerdyke 6'3" | 180 lbs | ATH Thayer Central | 2025 State NE | Thayer Central | 6’3″ 180 lbs
Running behind Sam Souerdyke Sam Souerdyke 6'3" | 180 lbs | ATH Thayer Central | 2025 State NE should pay major dividends for the Thayer Central Titans in 2023. Two-way standout Sam Souerdyke Sam Souerdyke 6'3" | 180 lbs | ATH Thayer Central | 2025 State NE will be back as the starting running back and to fill one of the linebacker roles. Sam is a long-striding RB that only seems to need a few steps before he hits full speed. He’s very tough to bring down on contact and has the lower body strength to keep pumping through tackle attempts. Sam is mostly a north-south runner but has the vision and cutback ability to bounce runs to the outside if he has to. Defensively, Souerdyke is a very rangy athlete that plays downhill very well. Sam does a great job wrapping up and using good form with his tackles, while still making sure they leave a mark.
Becker Pohlman Becker Pohlman 5'11" | 195 lbs | ATH Stanton | 2025 State NE | Stanton | 5’11” 195 lbs
The Mustangs are going to be a team to watch with the number of top-tier athletes on their squad. Junior Becker Pohlman Becker Pohlman 5'11" | 195 lbs | ATH Stanton | 2025 State NE is a DYNAMIC player with some fun tape to watch. Pohlman ended his sophomore season with a whopping 1,438 rushing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 87 total tackles on defense. He is a player you simply need to get the ball in his hands and let him work his magic. Becker is especially dangerous if you can feed him in space. He is able to take advantage of these situations with his elite vision and shiftiness. Pohlman also displays a great burst when he hits his gap and breakaway speed once he’s cleared the second level. Defensively, he plays with a lot of aggressiveness and had several plays where he delivered some big hits. Becker is versatile on defense, technically a free safety, but he can drop down into the box or even move over to a slot/nickel back role. Don’t sleep on Becker and the ‘Stangs.
Marcus Buchanan Marcus Buchanan 5'10" | 160 lbs | ATH Omaha Burke | 2025 State NE | Omaha Burke | 5’10” 160 lbs
I’ve had to the opportunity to watch Burke at a couple of 7v7 scrimmages recently, and both times I left very impressed with junior Marcus Buchanan Marcus Buchanan 5'10" | 160 lbs | ATH Omaha Burke | 2025 State NE . Marcus is expected to have a huge role at both receiver and defensive back. As a receiver, he is a very smooth route-runner with an already high football IQ. Marcus does a good job attacking weak spots in coverage and can use his quick footwork and twitch to create separation against man coverage. He’s very good after the catch with a nice bag of moves to help him elude defenders in open space. The same footwork and fluidity that make him a dangerous receiver also make him a sound cornerback. On top of that, his eye discipline and recognition also help him maintain good positioning in coverage. Good hand use to break up the pass too. Marcus already seems to have built a great connection with QB Nate Collins Nate Collins 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Omaha Burke | 2025 State NE and should continue that chemistry into the season.
