The state of Texas is never at a shortage of talented football players. Every month, I am going to look at some prospects from the Lone Star State that have been flying under the radar. All of the prospects listed in this article are players with the potential to have strong seasons in 2023. Preparations for the upcoming season are in full swing and it is time to highlight some players to watch out for this season.

Holden Bodie-Linebacker-Northwest-5'11” 205-Pounds-2024

Holden Bodie is a linebacker that is all over the field. The Northwest linebacker is a player that defeats blocks well and explodes into the offensive backfield. Last season, Bodie accounted for over 90 tackles, five sacks, and had two interceptions. He has the ability to surpass those numbers this upcoming season. Bodie is a player with the talent to play on Saturdays in the future and he has the opportunity to continue to impress scouts this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='481664' first='Caleb' last='Cappuccio']-Quarterback-Reagan-5'11” 175-Pounds-2025

The Reagan High School signal caller is a quarterback that has the potential to open plenty of eyes this upcoming season. Cappuccio does a good job of throwing an accurate football and putting it into some tight windows. He is not a quarterback that will lock in on just one wide receiver. Cappuccio tends to spread the ball around to several receivers. Last season, Cappuccio threw for a little under 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has the potential to surpass those numbers this season and is a player to keep an eye out for on Friday nights this fall.

Payton Greer-Running Back-Clear Falls-5'9” 140-Pounds-2024

Payton Greer is a running back that can do everything ask of him on the offensive side of the ball. Greer is a patient runner and will allow his offensive linemen to create a rushing lane. He has the patience needed to allow the lanes to develop. A facete of his game that has flown under the radar is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Greer has the talent to be split out wide and use his route running and speed to create separation from opposing defenders. He is a running back with the potential to have a big season in 2023.

Jackson Verdugo-Tight End-College Station-6'4” 225-Pounds-2025

Jackson Verdugo is a versatile prospect that can play the wide receiver or tight end spots with impressive consistency. He is a physical wide receiver that does a great job of using his athletic ability to get to the football. Last season, Verdugo racked up a little under 1,000 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. He has the potential to surpass those numbers this season. Verdugo is a threat in the red zone because of his ability to high point the football and I expect a big 2023 season for the talented College Station prospect.

Chris Valenzuela-Running Back-El Paso-5'11” 180-Pounds-2025

Chris Valenzuela has terrific speed. He is able to flip a switch and get into the open field quickly. Meanwhile, he is a patient running back and will allow his blockers to clear a lane before exploding through the hole. The El Paso running back does not go down on initial contact and it usually takes more than one tackler to bring him down. Valenzuela is a back that can be used in the passing game as well. He has the potential for a strong 2023 season and is a player to watch out for this season.
