It is well-known that top-tier defenses are the key ingredient to a championship-winning recipe, yet defensive players tend to find themselves floating a bit under the radar. For the defensive back position group, it can be difficult to get recognition because of the plug-and-play commonality in high school secondaries.
The five players listed below are safeties and cornerbacks expected to be hot commodities on the recruiting circuit following their junior seasons.
Mikhail Benner Mikhail Benner 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Broomfield | 2025 State CO | Broomfield | 6’1”, 175lbs | CB
Benner finished his sophomore season as the top cornerback among the class, securing a state-high 11 interceptions (14th nationally), a 4A state championship, and two Division I scholarship offers. Landing a spot as a top prospect will entice opponents to challenge him, putting Benner in a position to increase his stock value and see an influx of offers.
Marquis Jamison | Cherokee Trail | 6’0”, 155lbs | CB
Jamison is an athlete whose stock value is on the rise. He recently received his first college offer from CSU-Pueblo following an outstanding showing at their prospect camp. His standout sophomore year allowed him to build a strong resume on film while also adding a track state championship as a part of Cherokee Trail’s relay team. Jamison is in a situation where he could potentially emerge as one of the top cornerbacks in the state following his junior campaign, making him a must-know prospect.
Aiden Knapke Aiden Knapke 6'0" | 190 lbs | DB Cherry Creek | 2025 State CO | Cherry Creek | 6’0”, 190lbs | FS/SS
Knapke is no stranger to the spotlight. The two-time state champion is entering his third season as one of the best overall safeties in the Box State. His ability to cover over the top is built upon fluid movements and a strong understanding of the game, while his physicality allows him to play downhill with absolute power. Anyone who has watched Knapke play knows he is destined for D1 football, making him a must-offer player for every D1 school in the area.
Gionni Toledo Gionni Toledo 6'2" | 185 lbs | DB Broomfield | 2025 State CO | Broomfield | 6’2”, 190lbs | SS
Toledo is a phenomenal defender on the verge of a breakout junior season, even though his sophomore season was full of noteworthy plays. In addition to having great size and athleticism, his instincts and physicality allowed him to make a game-saving play in the semifinals that helped secure his team’s spot in the state championship. Toledo is heading into his junior season as a reigning state champ on the verge of being a highly recruited prospect.
Deion Giles-Ray Deion Giles-Ray 5'9" | 160 lbs | DB Denver East | 2025 State CO | Denver East | 5’9”, 165lbs | FS
Giles-Ray is a naturally gifted athlete whose playmaking abilities appear effortless. His instincts and athleticism allow him to be in multiple places at once and rarely far from the ball. The work he put in during the offseason helped him to stand out at camps among stiff competition. Giles-Ray is a multi-use player with the skills of a true playmaker.
