IOWA CITY, Iowa – July arrives this weekend, drawing closer the start of the high school football season. And we all know times flies.
I’ve been highlighting top performers from last season returning in 2023. You can see the links for quarterbacks, running backs and receivers in all seven of the state’s classifications listed above.
We’ve reached the tight end position. Here’s the group in Class 4A:
Keegan Hisler Keegan Hisler 5'11" | 180 lbs | LB Webster City | 2024 IA , ’24, Webster City – It’s difficult pigeonholing Hisler (6-0, 185) into a specific position, but there’s no doubt that he’s a solid two-way football player. He caught eight passes for 215 yards and a pair of scores last year. He contributed 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks on defense. Physical blocking stands out when you watch Hisler’s junior highlights of him playing tight end. He’s quick off of the snap and drives into opponents playing with good leverage, which explains him overwhelming bigger defenders.
Jaydn Cooper, ’25, Winterset – Cooper (6-2, 226) impresses right out of the shoot during his sophomore highlights. He takes a screen pass 51 yards for a touchdown. He races by a group of defenders and then barrels over another one before getting into the end zone. He looks fluid and athletic. He’s a punishing blocker with good technique. He caught 13 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in ’22.
Kelley Gates, ’24, Decorah – The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Gates does not have any highlight videos on his Hudl page. He caught four passes for 124 yards (31.0 YPR) and two touchdowns. He added 14.5 tackles (10 solo, 3.0 for loss) on defense.
Owen Thomas, ’24, Lewis Central – Lewis (6-3, 215) played an important role in a high-powered Titan offense that reached the state title game. He also dominated on defense. He caught 13 balls for 122 yards and six touchdowns last fall. He racked up 42 solo tackles (13.5 for loss) and 5.0 sacks with an interception. You see a big, physical, athletic football player during his junior highlights. He lines up all around the defense and plays fast. He also runs sharp routes, shows good burst and can block.
Casey Godbout, ’24, Glenwood – The Rams listed Godbout (6-0, 215) as an offensive lineman and a linebacker on their roster. He had 54 and 11 posted as his uniform numbers. He puts receiver, tight end and fullback on his junior highlights. It’s all a bit confusing. Then you watch the video. He’s an athletic guy with physicality. Glenwood finds creative ways to take advantage of his skills from multiple alignments. He accumulated nine receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 106 yards and three scores. He’s a willing and able blocker.
Brody Clubb Brody Clubb 6'3" | 245 lbs | DL Clear Creek-Amana | 2025 State IA , ’25, Clear Creek Amana – Clubb (6-3, 240) likely will come up on our defensive lineman list. That’s his future position. However, he’s a strong high school tight end as well. He caught six passes for 63 yards and a touchdown in ’22 when given opportunities in the receiving game. You also can see his strong blocking skills as well as impressive defensive clips on his sophomore highlights. He already reports an Iowa State scholarship offer.
Hunter Quagliano, ’24, Western Dubuque – Like Clubb, the future for Quagliano (6-1, 220) is on defense. He’s an active, physical linebacker. He also caught four passes for 61 yards on offense and played an important role blocking in a Bobcat offense that averaged 7.3 yards per rush in ’22. His junior highlights indicate he could help his team more from a receiving standpoint given the chance.
