IOWA CITY, Iowa – We've reached mid-July. A new high school football season is right around the corner. It will be here before we know it.

To help get us prepared, we're listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we've covered at the links above.

We're digging in on defense. We move on to Class 3A:

[player_tooltip player_id='252334' first='Jack' last='Limbaugh'], '25, Algona - One of the top overall players in the state for '25, Limbaugh (6-4, 225) comes from strong athletic stock with his mother (volleyball) and father (football) competing at the University of Nebraska. The Huskers reportedly have offered a scholarship as have Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State and Missouri. His sophomore highlight reel will win you over. His combination of power and speed provides a challenge for offensive lineman. He can finish off the QB after flushing him out of the pocket with excellent lateral quickness. He should see his tackles for loss (7.0 in '22) and sacks (1.0) rise this fall even with the extra attention he's sure to receive.

[player_tooltip player_id='245591' first='Franz' last='Reisz'], '24, Harlan - Limited to seven games as a junior, Reisz showed enough during the Cyclones' state championship run to reportedly secure scholarship offers from Lindenwood, Bemidji State, Northern State, Missouri Western, Sioux Falls, Northwest Missouri State and Wayne State. He's visited Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, South Dakota State and others. He's an intriguing prospect at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds. In '22, he racked up 7.5 tackles for loss. You can witness it while watching his junior highlights a disruptive edge that also plays the run well.

[player_tooltip player_id='247974' first='Brennen' last='Blegen'], '24, Benton Community - A North Dakota verbal commitment, Blegen (6-3, 285) also showed up among our Super 7 O-Linemen for this class. I believe the Fighting Hawks will be starting him on defense. He certainly proved productive on that side of the ball in '22, when he racked up 44 solo tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. When viewing his defensive highlights from last fall, he wins even when being double-teamed. He does well in keeping his pads low, head up and eyes on the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='665099' first='Ben' last='Kampman'], '24, Solon - The son of former Aplington-Parkersburg, Iowa Hawkeye and NFL defensive lineman Aaron Kampman, [player_tooltip player_id='665099' first='Ben' last='Kampman'] (6-3, 200) broke out for the Spartans last season with 29 solo tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks and 38 quarterback pressures. He has the makings of productive college player with added bulk and strength. He's reporting scholarship offers from Army and Northwest Missouri State, and he's visited Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and others. His junior highlights reveal a technically-sound pass rusher who can finish.

[player_tooltip player_id='247970' first='Carson' last='Bruhn'], '24, Sioux Center - Bruhn (6-6, 235) is verbally committed to the University of Kansas as a tight end. He earned IPSWA all-state second-team laurels last fall as a defensive lineman. He posted 25 solo tackles, 5.0 stops for loss and 2.5 sacks as a junior in '22. We can see on his junior defensive highlights a 3-4 end that crashes down the line and halts opposing rushing attacks. He's agile and quick coming after the quarterback. You can watch his tight end highlights HERE.

Rhett Schaefer, '24, Assumption - Schaefer attracted a lot of attention from opposing offenses lining up at nose guard last season, He produced 18 solo tackles, 7.0 stops for loss and a pair of sacks. You can see on his junior film that he disrupts plans along the offensive line and throws a lot of plays off schedule. At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds with strength, Schaefer makes sustaining blocks against him very difficult. He also benefits from his quickness.

[player_tooltip player_id='320768' first='Max' last='Chapman'], '24, Creston - The 6-2, 200-pound Chapman shines during his junior highlights. He sets an edge well coming from the outside in a 3-4. He's adept at keeping his eyes on the ball carrier and finding his way to the tackle. He accomplishes it with quickness and strength in separating from blocks. Last fall, he registered 21 solo tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
