2022 Record: 10-2 (2nd round of 5A, D1 playoffs)

Overview: Expectations are always high at Tascosa, so last season's second round elimination from the Class 5A, D1 playoffs hasn't aged well with the Rebel players or coaching staff. One thing we know about Tascosa under Ken Plunk – they will run the football. Last season the Rebels ran the ball more than 90 percent of the time while employing the flexbone scheme. As a result, the focus of the offense is the running backs and offensive line.

Top rusher Treshun Wilson is one of the top ball carriers in West Texas. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Wilson was a 1,000-yard rusher in 2022 (and a First-Team All-District Performer) and everything points to him doing it again. Tascosa's offensive coaches plan to utilize Wilson at two positions: B-Back (Fullback) and slot back. He's been offered by Eastern New Mexico. Andrew Merrell will also play fullback after lining up at slot back in 2022. Za'Cory Fisher and Caymon Carter should get some carries.

Tascosa had a four-way quarterback battle in the spring but the competition has now been reduced to three heading into preseason camp. Competing for the job right now are junior Charlie McKinney, junior Shepherd Stapp and sophomore Coltyn Fulton. Plunk has no intention of naming the starter until just before the season opener. Junior T.J. Tillman is the top returning wide receiver. Cassius Carter is a promising athlete that has already been offered by Eastern New Mexico. Zeyshaun Lewis is a rising junior that should contribute this season. Josh Cardona is a 6-foot-1 WR to watch.

Senior David Tripp anchors the offensive line. Exiting spring practice, most of the positions are up for grabs. Along the defensive front, juniors [player_tooltip player_id='1148929' first='Derrion' last='Howard'] and Jaden King should get plenty of playing time at defensive end. Senior Terry Atterberry will make some noise at defensive tackle. Jay Adams will make the leap from JV to varsity along with Eli Norvell at linebacker. Wilson will be one of the cornerbacks. Another name to watch at DB: Prince Phea.

2023 Schedule: After opening the season on a Thursday night against local rival Palo Duro, Tascosa travels to the Permian Basin on consecutive Fridays to face Midland Legacy and Odessa Permian. The district opener is Sept. 22 against Amarillo at West Texas A&M's stadium in Canyon. Circle the Oct. 27 home game against Lubbock-Cooper. The district title could be on the line in that game.

Coach's Comments: “Spring practice went well. The kids worked hard and we stayed relatively injury-free. We were a little disappointed by our early exit last season. But we played a good team in Burleson Centennial and they beat us. Our kids have bought into our expectations. We have to be a little more consistent in our preparation, especially when we get into the playoffs and its single elimination. Our quarterback battle is down to three, maybe two guys. But I like to wait until as late as possible to name a starter. Some guys look better in pads” – Tascosa head coach Ken Plunk.
