Continue ReadingWest Perry had indeed a remarkable season last year, they went 11-2 and won 2 playoff games. West Perry had gone 5-6 the year before, so West Perry snuck up on people. But if you look at the big picture you could see that Head Coach Bob Boden has been building for this season since 2014 the year he took over. His 1st two years resulted in a back-to-back 0-10 season, so to transform from that start to now winning two playoff games is an impressive effort by him and his program. Also, West Perry is bringing a ton of talent back and I expect them to again have a successful season.
Top returning players:
Highlights
Marcus Quaker Marcus Quaker 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB West Perry | 2024 State PA . Quaker is returning this season for his last run as quarterback for West Perry. He has had a successful career so far with his Senior Year still left. He has recently picked up steam with his recruiting with an offer from the University of Pennsylvania. Below is what I wrote about Quaker earlier this year:
Quaker 1st came on my radar when he and West Perry destroyed a previous undefeated Lancaster Catholic team in the 1st round of the playoffs. Quaker is your classic dual-threat quarterback. He is deadly as a runner. He is so good at running options and zone-read plays but also is tough when he scrambles. A coach once told me a great skill kid is someone you cannot catch in a phone booth, that is Quaker. He always seems to make the 1st person miss when he is running the ball. Quaker can throw the ball as well and is especially lethal when he is on a rollout or a bootleg play. If he continues to develop as a passer the sky’s the limit for this quarterback.
Ian Goodling Ian Goodling 6'1" | WR West Perry | 2024 State PA . Goodling played wide receiver for West Perry last year and he is a different maker at the position. 1st what stands out from his film is his speed. He just runs past defenders, either on deep passes or even on short passes. He does a good job of using his body to catch the ball when defenders are near him on 50/50 balls. He is constantly making difficult catches in coverage. He is also good after he catches the ball and picks up extra yart. He will take a short pass and always make good gains out of it. Goodling is also West Perry’s field goal kicker and did a nice job with that as well. Goodling projects as a College Football player who should get some looks after another strong year.
Brad Hockenberry
Brad Hockenberry
Brad Hockenberry. Hockenberry played outside linebacker for West Perry last year. He is a good athlete that really flashes that athletic ability at linebacker. He did a nice job in pass coverage. He is equally as good at dropping in a zone as he is guarding players one-on-one. When he tackles players he is a sound physical tackler who does a good job finishing tackles. Hockenberry is also good at setting the edge and either making the play or forcing the play inside. He also does a nice job making tackles in the open field. Hockenberry flashed some good skills and should also have a chance to play College Football with a strong Senior year.
Caleb Gutshall
Caleb Gutshall
Caleb Gutshall. Gutshall played offensive line and defensive line for West Perry last year. At both positions, he showed good athleticism. At offensive line, she shows a good ability to block defensive linemen by firing off the ball and engaging them. He shows off his strength by pushing defenders off the ball. At defensive line, he is equally as good, and offensive linemen have a hard time blocking him one-on-one. Gutshall flashed some good skills last year.
Bryce Smith
Bryce Smith
Bryce Smith. Smith played defensive back for West Perry last year. He has limited film, but he flashed some good skills at the position. He does a nice job in coverage. He does a good job both playing the ball and the offensive player. He showed he can cover in zone coverage. Also, Smith showed an ability to come upfield and make a good tackle. He did a nice job in the open field making good clean tackles. Smith showed some skills and should have an even bigger year for West Perry this year.
Final Thoughts:
West Perry is trying to repeat the success of last year’s team this year, while it might hard to accomplish they have some players to make it happen. Marcus Quaker Marcus Quaker 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB West Perry | 2024 State PA at quarterback is a good place to start along with Ian Goodling Ian Goodling 6'1" | WR West Perry | 2024 State PA at wide receiver. Quaker is a true difference-maker at QB and as long as he stays healthy West Perry should have a chance to have a successful season. I would not count out West Perry.
