Several schools brought entire teams (Rio Rancho, La Cueva, Santa Fe, etc.) while other teams were pieced together with players from multiple schools.
Friday afternoon’s action was highlighted by a pair of Week 1 matchups: West Mesa-Santa Fe and La Cueva-Rio Rancho. Prior to those enticing matchups, West Mesa and talented quarterback Elijah Brody Elijah Brody 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB West Mesa | 2024 State NM faced Rio Rancho in the afternoon’s first marquee matchup.
Brody, who appears to have developed a nice chemistry with WR Ricky Martinez Ricky Martinez 5'11" | 160 lbs | WR West Mesa | 2024 State NM , has been offered by New Mexico.
Brody dueled with the Rams QB duo of Noah Nelson Noah Nelson 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Rio Rancho | 2024 State NM and JJ Arellano JJ Arellano 5'11" | 165 lbs | QB Rio Rancho | 2025 State NM for 25 minutes. Nelson also played defensive back, which could be his best position at the next level.
La Cueva QB Cameron Dyer Cameron Dyer 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB La Cueva | 2025 State NM (offered by New Mexico State, where his older brother Deven plays) showed the Rams what they can expect on Aug. 19 at Wilson Stadium as he rifled the ball all over the field to his impressive array of fleet-footed receivers ( Tanner Montano Tanner Montano 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR La Cueva | 2026 State NM , Cruz Markham Cruz Markham 6'3" | 200 lbs | TE La Cueva | 2024 State NM , Jackson Hix Jackson Hix 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR La Cueva | 2024 State NM , Jayen Barros Jayen Barros 5'10" | 165 lbs | WR La Cueva | 2026 State NM , etc.).
In addition, the Bears’ new dynamic RB Kobe McGill quickly made his presence felt as well in what could be considered his public unveiling to the New Mexico high school football community.
How good is McGill? Even though he’s listed at 5-foot-6, 145 pounds, he’s fast as lightning (4.4 in the 40) and catches the ball well with strong hands and outstanding body control. He recently transferred to La Cueva from Highland High School in Gilbert, AZ. His current offer list includes Oregon, Louisville, Arizona, Washington, West Virginia, Duke, New Mexico, Miami (OH) and Coastal Carolina.
That’s six Power 5 offers and counting for McGill.
