Having reached the mid-way point of the summer, it is time to examine some defensive backs that have the potential to open plenty of eyes this season. The cupboard is not empty when it comes to talented players in the secondary. Let’s start our weekend off a list of defensive backs to watch in 2023.
Brandon Bennett-Cornerback-Dallas Carter-5’11” 160-Pounds-2024
Brandon Bennett has a nose for the football. A large percentage of the time opposing wide receivers usually have to turn into the defender to keep Bennett from making a play on the ball. He has the speed that causes opposing wide receiver’s problems and he is not afraid to use his hands to alter the routes. The Dallas Carter cornerback has the potential to have a big season in 2023. I expect a strong season from Bennett this season.
Devin Sanchez Devin Sanchez 6'2" | 170 lbs | DB North Shore | 2025 State TX -Cornerback-North Shore-6’3” 185-Pounds-2025
Devin Sanchez Devin Sanchez 6'2" | 170 lbs | DB North Shore | 2025 State TX is an extremely versatile player in the North Shore secondary. He can shift from the safety position to the cornerback with no trouble at all. He has excellent size for either position. Sanchez does a great job of separating the ball from the ball carrier and causing incompletions. He is able to make plays on the ball and take it back in the opposite direction. Sanchez has a high motor, and it would be wise for opposing quarterbacks to make sure he is accounted for on the field. Sanchez has the potential to have a big season this season.
Tony Hamilton-Safety-College Station-5’10” 175-Pounds-2024
The College Station safety does a terrific job of playing the ball while it is in the air. He punishes opposing wide receivers when he hits them. Hamilton is a safety that is not afraid to make a tackle and he does not mind moving up and plugging up the rushing lane. He does not mind moving up to play near the line of scrimmage to defend against the run. Hamilton is a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball and he is a prospect with the potential to have a big season for College Station.
Ivy Kelley Ivy Kelley 5'8" | 160 lbs | DB Wichita Falls | 2024 TX -Safety-Wichita Falls-5’8” 2024
Ivy Kelley Ivy Kelley 5'8" | 160 lbs | DB Wichita Falls | 2024 TX is a safety that is always around the ball carrier. He swarms to the ball carrier and is not afraid to make the tackle. Kelley does an impressive job of reading the opposing quarterback’s eyes. He has the ability to play the ball in the air and either pick off the pass or it away from the opposing wide receiver. Kelley has an impressive 2022 football season and I look for him to have an even stronger 2023 football season.
Davoderick Roberts Davoderick Roberts 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Duncanville | 2025 State TX -Safety-Duncanville-6’0” 160-Pounds-2025
Davoderick Roberts Davoderick Roberts 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Duncanville | 2025 State TX has great speed for the safety position. He takes on and defeats blocks extremely well. He does not mind playing near the line of scrimmage and destroying the offensive play calls. Roberts does a good job coming on the blitz and getting into the backfield. He plays the ball in the air well and makes opposing wide receivers work for the football. Roberts is a prospect to watch out for this season.
