Lone Star Recruiting News and Notes 6-25-23

We have plenty of recruiting headlines to look at and get caught up on from a week of camps and 7-on-7 competitions. Let's start a new week off with some recruiting news to pay attention to this week.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='149649' first='Maurice' last='Williams']-Defensive Back-Shadow Creek-6'1” 200-Pounds-2024</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='149649' first='Maurice' last='Williams'] is a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for Shadow Creek. He does an excellent job of playing the ball while it is in the air. Williams battles for the football, and he forces opposing wide receivers to have to play defense at times. He is a safety that is not afraid to deliver a hit and separate the ball from the ball carrier. Williams is one of the top safety prospects in the country and he placed a verbal commitment with the Houston Cougars over the weekend. Congratulations go out to the talented Shadow Creek safety.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Tyler Mercer-Offensive Line-Prosper-6'5” 285-Pounds-2024</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Prosper offensive lineman is a versatile prospect that can play the left tackle spot or either of the guard positions. Mercer explodes out of the stance and can punish opposing defensive linemen in the run blocking area. He has good quickness and gets out in front well on screen passes. Mercer has impressive pass blocking ability and does a good job of keeping his quarterback off of the ground. Mercer placed a verbal commitment with Tulane earlier in the week and congratulations go out to him on placing a commitment with the Green Wave.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='215022' first='Jonah' last='Bowman']-Linebacker-Rock Hill-6'2” 200-Pounds-2024</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='215022' first='Jonah' last='Bowman'] has tremendous speed at the linebacker position. Bowman is able to fend off and defeat blocks well. He attacks the opposing offensive backfield and does an impressive job of disrupting the passing game of the opponent. The Rock Hill linebacker has had a busy recruiting week. He has earned scholarship offers from Tulsa and Lafayette. He is setting the stage for a strong 2023 season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1420735' first='Xavier' last='Johnson']-Wide Receiver-Richland- 6'2” 170-Pounds-2025</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1420735' first='Xavier' last='Johnson'] is a difficult assignment for opposing defensive backs to contend with. Johnson is a smooth route runner, and he uses that skill well to create separation from opposing defensive backs. Johnson is a threat in the red zone. He has the size and the athletic ability to high point the football and cause plenty of headaches for opposing defenses in the process. Over the past few weeks, Johnson has earned scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Baylor, and TCU. I expect the Richland wide out to continue to attract the offers over the next few months.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='413113' first='Zechariah' last='Sample']-Athlete-Katy Jordan-5'11” 165-Pounds-2024</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Zecharaiah Sample is a versatile prospect that can hurt opposing defenses in a variety of ways. At the wide receiver position, Sample can slice you up with his speed and route running. He does a great job of hauling in the football and can stretch the field vertically. The Arizona State Sun Devils have taken notice and extended a scholarship offer his way. Over the weekend, Sample placed a verbal commitment with the Sun Devils. Congratulations go out to the talented wide receiver. I look for a strong season from Sample, he has the potential to open plenty of eyes this season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
