This was a team that wasn’t truly challenged until deep into November. And while a lot of talent will move onto the next level, some of the stars still remain for Caldwell and will look to run it back in 2023. If there is any team in New Jersey that could go undefeated in back to back seasons, this is the one. And here are five players that could make that dream happen.
Louis Anemone
Louis Anemone
A player that is hard to keep track of on the field, Louis Anemone played multiple roles for Caldwell in 2022. Being a running, receiving, and throwing threat, Louis will catch teams off guard with all of the positions he excels at. Rushing for 302 yards and 4 touchdowns, Louis complemented Joey well with his quickness and agility. And with 145 receiving yards and 2 passing touchdowns, you can never be too sure with what Louis will do when he is on the field.
On defense, Louis was one of those lockdown players that rarely let big plays go his direction. With 3 interceptions and 35 total tackles, Louis commanded an impressive secondary effort that prevented teams from scoring any big points on the season. Louis played a big part in Caldwell’s success last season, and I expect an even bigger role in 2023.
Joey Marinello Joey Marinello 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB Caldwell | 2024 NJ
Joey Marinello Joey Marinello 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB Caldwell | 2024 NJ
An all around phenom for Caldwell, Joey Marinello Joey Marinello 5’9″ | 175 lbs | RB Caldwell | 2024 NJ had one of the most impressive statistical seasons in the state in 2022. The stats he put up were incredible, and it wasn’t just on one side of the ball. Joey was able to have elite numbers lining up as a running back and on defense. Offensively, Joey ran all over the field with 1134 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. You do not want to get in Joey’s way when he picks up speed, he will steamroll the defender and keep on trucking.
Defensively, Joey again made a huge impact with 108 total tackles, 3 interceptions, a forced fumble, and 1 sack. He plays a pivotal role in Caldwell’s defense, and makes it tough for offenses to gain an inch when they run a play his direction. Look for Joey to continue to impress us in 2023.
Julian Casale Julian Casale 6’0″ | 235 lbs | DL James Caldwell | 2024 NJ is one of my favorite defensive players in the state. The middle linebacker for Caldwell’s dominant defense, he is the type of player that has a nose for the football. He is not an easy player to block. He will plug up the hole and prevent any big plays through the tackles, and has the speed to get to the outside and force the runner to the sideline.
Caldwell has a ton of big hitters, but Julian may be the biggest of them all. Any team going up against this defense will surely wake up the next day with a few extra aches and pains. With 115 tackles last year, you can see that he flies all over the field to make the play. And with 34 of those tackles in the backfield and 9 sacks, look for Julian to have some incomprehensible statistics in 2023.

Michael Mignone Michael Mignone 6’0″ | 200 lbs | LB Caldwell | 2025 NJ was a sophomore in 2022 with a lot of upside for the future. Playing predominately on the defensive side of the ball, Mike was a reliable outside linebacker that rarely lost containment.
A force to be reckoned with off of the edge, Mike will cause the QB to make a poor decision because of the fear he inflicts on them. He is a smart football player, and truly attacks the ball every opportunity he gets. With 60 tackles, 30 of those for a loss, 2 sacks, and 2 interceptions, you can see how big of an impact he had for his defensive unit. A big guy with a ton of muscle packed on already, he’s hard to block and hard to pass against. Give Mike some more looks this fall.
As mentioned earlier, Caldwell is full of big hitters. Jake Gruzas Jake Gruzas 5’9″ | 155 lbs | DB Caldwell | 2024 NJ is no exception. A sure tackler that flies up field to get to the ball carrier, Jake played a big role playing at the cornerback position. With 32 tackles and 1 interception on the season, Jake always seemed to get to the ball just in time to break up the pass. Sometimes falling out of position, Jake had the speed to catch back up with a receiver. I’m sure that is something he is working hard on this off season. Always finding a way to get in front of the ball, it will be interesting to see if Jake is also utilized on the offensive side of the ball in 2023.
