Champaign county is home to roughly 20 high schools. I dove into the Hudl accounts of many of those schools and came away very impressed with five particular athletes from the county. The five athletes come from Centennial or Mahomet-Seymour high schools. The group are all athletes that seem to be slipping under the radar, but turn on the tape and I have a feeling that will change. Dive into the analysis of each of the five, and then give their highlights a watch also.
Jordan Steward
Jordan Steward
The 6′ 240 lbs DL is an undersized, under the radar prospect that has proven he can be disruptive in the trenches. Jordan thrives with his quickness. He has the first step quickness needed to be able to shoot gaps or get position or leverage over his OL. Steward also has consistent highlights of him being able to transition that quickness into power. Power that allows him to be stout against the run. Despite not being the biggest athlete, Jordan holds his ground and then use active hands to disengage. Don’t miss this kid down in IL. His tape is below.
Jackson Barnhart
Jackson Barnhart
Another Centennial DL prospect to know is Jackson Barnhart. Jackson has the prototypical size at 6’3″ 240 lbs and effective length. He has built himself into a mismatch nightmare in the trenches. You expect a kid his size to win with strength. Yet multiple plays show that he can win with pure burst and ovearll speed. He plays with a high motor too and will chase down the ball. Barnhart has some ability to dip under OTs while speed rushing the edge. It is good to see that the big man does have the power to be able to run through double teams as well. Don’t miss out on the All State Honorable Mention prospect.
Jeremiah Young
Jeremiah Young
The final Centennial standout I want to highlight is the massive, imposing OL Jeremiah Young. Jeremiah checks in at 6’6″ 305 lbs. He is an absolute mountain of a man, and he pays like a man among boys on the field. Despite his huge size, Young has that athletic lower body that you need to see. It allows him to close quick on the DL and his length allows him to make the initial contact. That contact is a devastating punch that has sent defenders to the dirt on contact. Jeremiah also has the range to pile up multiple pancakes in one play. In pass protection, Jeremiah is light on his feet, can easily slide and mirror rushers, and he still packs the same punch when he sets his anchor and strikes. This is a need to know OL from IL.
Another DL to know from Champaign County is Mahomet- Seymour’s Jack Gallier Jack Gallier 6’1″ | 255 lbs | DL Mahomet-Seymour | 2024 IL . Gallier checks in at 6’1″ 260 lbs. The thick, compact DL is blessed with a reliable base of quickness. Both out of his stance and laterally, Jack is able to eat up space and move side to side without losing speed. In short areas, Jack is a mismatch because of how quickly he can get through gaps. Jack makes a lot of high IQ plays as well. He sniffs out screens and diagnoses plays quickly to ensure he doesn’t put himself out of position with that quickness. Check out his tape below.
Highlights
We end the article with the RB out of Mahomet- Seymour. The 5’11” 200 lbs RB is coming off of 1100+ total yards as a junior. The playmaker averaged over 7 yards per carry despite having just shy of 150 carries. It is intriguing to see how he earned that average. Luke excels at running his feet through contact. He piles up the yards after contact, and thanks to his contact balance it looks like the hits barely effect him. Luke also has the speed to create the big plays once he gets to the open field too. Lastly, the RB does a good job of using his blocks and sees the field well overall. Give this kid a look. A hidden gem.
