Super 7 - 5A Running Backs

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 2023 high school football season is just a short summer away. It will be here before we know it.

You can read about the quarterbacks HERE, and now we'll take a look at seven standout runnings backs in each class. Here's 4A:

[player_tooltip player_id='156632' first='Jaxon' last='Cherry'], '24, Webster City - Cherry (6-1, 210) paced 4A in rushing yards (1,804) and touchdowns (31) last season in earning first-team all-state laurels from the IPSWA. He averaged 8.4 yards per carry. He stood out on defense as well with 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Linebacker certainly could be his college position. His junior highlights offers evidence that Cherry impacts the game when he's on the field. He pursues relentlessly on defense and punishes people when carrying the ball.

Grant Glausser, '24, Western Dubuque - You can see on his junior highlights that Glausser (5-11, 198) is a problem for opponents on both sides of the ball. He's mostly a straight-ahead, one-or-two cut runner with impressive speed underway. He flows well and explodes to the ball on defense. He rushed for 1,564 yards (7.6 YPC) and 19 touchdowns. He also caught seven passes.

[player_tooltip player_id='247949' first='Cody' last='Klein'], '24, Newton - Klein (5-9, 165) reports a 4.49 40-yard dash on his Hudl profile. You can see speed while watching his junior highlights. He eludes defenders whether running it up the gut or flowing to the outside. He impresses with an extra gear. He rushed for 1,319 yards (6.8 YPC) and 14 touchdowns as last season. He added 15 catches for 199 yards and two scores.

[player_tooltip player_id='156487' first='Titus' last='Cram'], '24, Bondurant-Farrar - Cram (6-0, 195) stands out as the highest-profile player on this list. He reports scholarship offers from Duke, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin. As you can see on his junior highlights, colleges see him as a prospect on both sides of the ball. He's a playmaker. As a running back, he shows good vision and patience waiting for blocks. He offers speed and power. He rushed for 1,279 yards (6.5 YPC) and 16 touchdowns in '22.

[player_tooltip player_id='761746' first='Adrian' last='Carrillo'], '24, Spencer - In viewing his junior highlights, Carrillo (5-10, 185) shows good speed and burst. He doesn't dance around. He's decisive and hits the hole hard. He runs with power and keeps his legs going to help break tackles. He racked up 1,204 yards (6.4 YPC) and 11 touchdowns on the ground last fall. He chipped in with five receptions and caught a score. He added 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks on defense.

Caden Schisel, '24, Burlington - Schisel (6-0, 190) totaled 1,081 yards (7.1 YPC) and 14 touchdowns in '22. On defense, he registered 28 solo tackles with 5.0 for loss and 3.0 sacks. He also picked off a pass. While watching his junior highlights, you can envision him succeeding on either side of the ball at the next level. His athleticism and toughness stand out. He appears to give max effort all the time.

[player_tooltip player_id='797201' first='Hank' last='Wilmes'], '25, Winterset - Wilmes (5-7, 155) shows during his sophomore highlights that he's elusive and shifts to his next gear quickly. While speed stands out in his game, he can put his head down and gain tough yards, too. He rushed for 523 yards and five touchdowns, and caught nine passes for 41 yards. I would expect those numbers to spike this coming fall.
