IOWA CITY, Iowa – July arrives this weekend, drawing closer the start of the high school football season. And we all know times flies.

I've been highlighting top performers from last season returning in 2023. You can see the links for quarterbacks and running backs in all seven of the state's classifications listed above.

Wide receivers are next up. Let's check out 1A:

Mason Boothby, '24, Underwood - Boothby (6-0, 155) is the leading-returning receiver in the class. He hauled in 40 balls for 936 (23.4 YPC) and 11 touchdowns as a junior in '22. He also picked off seven passes on defense, including a Pick-6, and averaged 19.5 yards on 12 kick returns and 14.1 on 10 punt returns. His 11th-grade highlights show a receiver who can move around the offense and get behind the defense. He looks really natural returning punts, and reacts well at cornerback.

[player_tooltip player_id='533059' first='Keegan' last='Soard'], '24, South Central Calhoun - Soard (6-4, 195) looks like a matchup problem during his junior highlights of '22. Not only does he hold a height and athleticism advantage over most of his opponents, he's a sound route runner with speed and elusiveness after the catch. He caught 33 passes for 780 yards (23.6 YPC) and 9 touchdowns. He also picked off two passes, recorded 14 solo tackles and recovered a fumble.

[player_tooltip player_id='533058' first='Karson' last='Elwood'], '24, Treynor - The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Elwood paced the Cardinals in receptions (49), receiving yards (742) and touchdown catches (8) last fall. He produced 37.0 tackles (17 solo, 1.5 for loss), intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble. He returned two punts for touchdowns as well. When watching his junior highlights, you witness a smooth route runner with quickness off the line and burst after the catch.

Jackson Naeve, '24, Regina - The Regal offense received 31 catches, 550 receiving yards and 8 touchdown receptions from Naeve (6-0, 170) in '22. He added 181 yards (6.2 YPC) rushing yards, two interceptions and averaged 19.9 yards on seven kick returns with a TD. Learning from former Iowa Hawkeye receiver Ed Hinkel at Regina, Naeve is a technically sound receiver. When you watch his junior highlights, you can tell there's some speed and athleticism as well.

Josh Ravlin, '24, Underwood - Another talented pass catcher from the Eagles' air-it-out offense, Ravlin (5-10, 170) contributed 43 receptions, 535 yards and 8 touchdowns to the cause. Also an accomplished basketball player, Ravlin transfers that athleticism onto the gridiron. You see it when watching clips on his Hudl page. He adjusts well while ball is in the air, positioning himself to make difficult catches. He often finds a way to get behind the defense.

Jack Vanfossan, '24, Underwod - Yes, we have another Underwood wideout. Vanfossan (6-3, 185) caught 32 passes for 439 yards and 7 touchdowns. His junior highlights feature a long-limbed receiver that runs well and rips off crisp routes. He shows a good feel for making defenders miss after receptions across the middle and leaping ability to win balls over the top of opponents.

[player_tooltip player_id='320844' first='Klayton' last='Bremer'], '24, Panorama - At 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, Bremer is another rangy receiver in this class. He secured 36 catches for 406 yards and 2 touchdowns last fall. He averaged 20.1 yards on eight kick returns and 13.5 on 11 punt returns. During his junior highlights, he lines up at different positions, including taking snaps from the wildcat formation. He runs well and seems to get to his top speed quickly.
