Continue ReadingAlabama is one of the more slept-on states in the country when it comes to high school football talent. Here at Prep Redzone, we try our best to uncover some of those underrated prospects. Let’s start with the QB position.
Walker McClinton – 2024 – Trinity Presbyterian
McClinton is a highly productive 2024 QB that really shines when you turn on the tape. McClinton is a good athlete that can evade pressure in the pocket and scamper to give his receivers more time to get open. Even with his speed, he does a good job of standing tall in the pocket for that extra split second. McClinton has an uncanny feel for the field, always keeping his eyes downfield and frequently makes improbable throws into hole shots and tight windows. He has a smooth release and throws a catchable ball with a tight spiral, possesses more than enough arm strength to attack all levels of the field, especially for a smaller QB. I will be keeping an eye on McClinton, I believe he can outplay his high school rankings.
Gabriel Benton Gabriel Benton 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Benjamin Russell | 2024 State AL – 2024 – Benjamin Russell
In my opinion, Benton is one of the biggest hidden gem prospects in Alabama. Not only was he highly productive, but he also shows some serious FBS-level traits on film. For starters, he has a big arm and can really drive the ball all over the field. He can attack tight windows in the short and intermediate game and also sling the ball behind the safeties. His upside is noticeable, as he still has room to grow mechanically. Once he ties everything together, he could be a true steal in the 2024 class. With a few D1 offers under his belt this spring, schools are finally starting to take notice.
Keiland Baker Keiland Baker 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Holtville | 2025 State AL – 2025 – Holtville
On film, Baker shows a lot of promise and competitive toughness. Baker is a good athlete that is not afraid to pull it and run. He has good vision in the open field and shows the toughness and willingness to battle through tacklers and fight for extra yards. He looks collected and natural in the pocket, sensing pressure well and hanging in the pocket for an extra second, even if it means he takes on some contact. Has a clean, fluid release and gets the ball out fairly quickly. He has good enough arm strength to make most throws and has good touch on his deep ball. Overall, Baker is a gutsy QB prospect that has good athleticism and looks natural as a passer.
Nathan Commander Nathan Commander 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB T.R. Miller | 2025 State AL – 2025 – TR Miller
Commander might not be the kind of prospect that catches your eye at first glance, but he showcases some good mechanics and can make some plays on the move. Commander possesses a tight, smooth release and layers the ball very well. He throws with good timing and precision, tossing a catchable ball. Very experienced with getting outside of the pocket and throwing on the run, whether by design or not. Can stop a dime and throw off a firm base, which allows him to put his entire body into the throw. Goes to work in an offense with a lot of motion and post-snap reads, so he has experience with modern concepts.
Jarrett Daughtry Jarrett Daughtry 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Faith Academy | 2024 AL – 2024 – Faith Academy
Daughtry is a proven QB prospect that is looking to duplicate the same success he found as a senior. Daughtry may be a bit unconventional in terms of his mechanics, but he has a really good understanding of his responsibilities as a QB and has the production to prove so. He senses pressure very well in the pocket and is surprisingly creative. He fights hard to stay upright and shows some sneaky suddenness that he uses to evade pressure. His release is longer, but he is a good decision-maker that looks confident throwing to his secondary reads and throws a smooth, catchable ball with good timing. Daughtry looks to have a very good grasp of the QB position and has done nothing but win up to this point in his career as a starter.
