During the next phase of our coverage we will go a bit more in depth providing an overview of each position. Coverage includes standouts I noted, coach recommendations that I may have missed, and positional MVPs.
Scout’s Notes: Standout Linebackers
The thing that made Hernandez stand out to me the most was how active he was with his hands at the camp. From what I observed he did the most consistent, reliable job of jamming backs out the backfield. From there Hernandez made sure to do his best to extend in order to tip or deflect the ball, while also playing the receivers hands to break up passes attempts.
The lone Pennsylvania product on today’s list did a great job handling double-moves. Dennis did a nice job of keying the back’s hips to ensure he did not get shook out of his cleats. The times he may have lost by a step or two, Dennis recovered due to the amount of speed he possesses.
Highlights
What caught my eye about Obser is how well he moved, in particularly with a wide base. More so than his contemporaries, Obser’s base did not get narrow as he was drawn to assignments or changed directions. He appears to keep his athletic stance/football position throughout everything he does on the field.
Gugel played with outstanding leverage all day long. Depending on whichever hash he was on, he forced the defender to where his help would theoretically be. During one-on-one’s this frustrated backs to no end and led to many incompletions. Most importantly, Gugel makes sure to finish plays.
Coaches’ Favorites
This next batch of linebackers left an impression at this event as well. Great players in their own right, they were identified as strong performers by the coaching staff working the event. With nearly 300 prospects, I cannot catch everyone’s rep!
