I saw a lot of great competition this weekend as the Nebraska Red Wolves hosted the inaugural Mother’s Day Showdown at the Capitol. Several teams from 4 states traveled to Lincoln to battle for the bragging rights of winning the first tournament.
One last review from the Mother’s Day Showdown, this one featuring the Stangs 7v7. Stangs 7v7 features several of the young, hungry players from Millard North. The Stangs started the tournament with a 3-0 start featuring extremely gritty close wins in pool play. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to survive their first-round matchup and were eliminated. Despite this early exit, I saw a ton of positives out of the Stangs, playing a lot more consistently, instinctively, and ready to make plays.
Check out my standouts from the Stangs 7v7 team.
Mason Guenthner Mason Guenthner 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Millard North | 2025 State NE | 2025 | WR/DB | 6’0″ 190 lbs
– Great two-way player that looks better every time I watch him play.
– Offensively, he’s a great route runner that can find ways to get open and create separation.
– Very reliable receiving option. He was always available whenever the Stangs needed a quick reception for a first.
– Versatile defender that can line up anywhere on defense. He can play cornerback, safety, and now even has linebacker size.
– Great defensive communicator on the field. Called out offenses and helped teammates get in position.
Desmond Dhaenens Desmond Dhaenens 5'11" | 160 lbs | DB Millard North | 2025 State NE | 2025 | DB/WR | 5’11” 160 lbs
– Super impressive lockdown defender.
– Great quickness and agility in coverage. Smooth backpedal and shifty lateral movement.
– Physical corner that can engage in hand fighting with his opponent and will attack the ball in the air.
– He can defend outside and slot receivers.
– Great receiver as well. Does a great job securing the ball and has nice twitch and acceleration after the catch.
Marcus Hankins Marcus Hankins 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Millard North | 2025 NE | 2025 | QB | 5’11” 180 lbs
– In my first good look at Marcus, he looked very good all weekend and left a great impression.
– Good arm strength to deliver the ball to all levels and displayed great ball placement.
– Hankins made some tough passes into tight windows and did a good job throwing his receivers open.
– Moves through his progressions very well and can also extend the play with his legs. Solid mobility.
Dre Thomas Dre Thomas 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Millard North | 2024 State NE | 2024 | WR | 5’10”
– Spectacular catch after spectacular catch. Dre was a walking highlight reel.
– Dre is a legit deep threat that had multiple long touchdowns during the tournament—tons of speed to challenge defenses vertically.
– Great concentration through the catch. Made several receptions in traffic or with defenders draped on him- legit hand strength.
– Thomas can win off the line with a great release and is sharp at the breakoff points of his routes.
– Elevates very well over defenders to catch the ball at the high point.
Evan Hansen Evan Hansen 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH Millard North | 2024 State NE | 2024 | ATH/QB |
– Very impressed with Evan’s athleticism and versatility. Played QB for the Mustangs during the season and was out there locking down receivers on defense.
– Smart, disciplined defender that can cling right onto a receiver’s hip pocket and follow them throughout their route.
– Aggressive ball skills. Does a good job trusting his instincts when going up to make a play on the ball.
– Evan was another receiver that was looked at in crucial moments. He was tough to contain in short-yardage situations, winning quickly off the line and getting open for a first down.
