I saw a lot of great competition this weekend as the Nebraska Red Wolves hosted the inaugural Mother’s Day Showdown at the Capitol. Several teams from 4 different states traveled to Lincoln to battle for the bragging rights of winning the first tournament of its kind.
Next team in our Mother’s Day Showdown is one of the top 7v7 teams out of the KC/MO area, Epic 7 Midwest. Epic7 Blue navigated through pool play and bracket play en route to the championship game, ultimately falling to Carroll. However, they did manage to have an outstanding tournament. I didn’t get as many Epic 7 player names as I would’ve liked, but I did walk away with three players that really stood out.
Check out my three Epic7 Midwest standouts from the Mother’s Day Showdown.
Myles Carson | 2024 | DB/WR | Rockhurst | 6’3″ 185 lbs
– If I had to give out an award for the top CB of the tournament, it would probably go to Myles.
– Very fluid in coverage, loose through the hips, and great footwork.
– Myles’ aggressiveness in coverage is what really stood out to me. He did not shy away from playing press coverage.
– Carson uses his hands extremely well. He was contesting catches, breaking passes up, and making plays on the ball whenever the ball went his way.
– Great route runner on offense. Does a great job getting open and gave defenses fits both days with how well he can maneuver the redzone- scored lots of TDs in that area.
– Need to get this guy on the 2024 rankings ASAP!!
Keynon Johnson | 2024 | LB | Truman | 6’3″ 210 lbs
– First thing that stands out about Keynon is his size. Next level LB size at 6’3″ and 210 lbs with great length.
– Continues to impress when he gets moving on the field. Great sideline-to-sideline range that complements his quick instincts.
– Strength to take on tight ends and bigger receivers with the mobility to take on RBs.
– Very smart when reading the play and does a great job communicating pre-snap and during the play.
– Really wish I could’ve seen Keynon lay some licks on people!
Michael Larry Jr. | 2024 | WR/ATH | Truman | 5’8″ 160 lbs
– Some lingering injuries kept Michael from fully taking off but we did see a lot of why he is one of the top rising prospects in MO.
– He showed nice shiftiness to create separation from defenders and finishes strong at the catch point.
– Good twitch and wiggle after the catch. He took some short passes for big gains with his elusiveness.
– Mike’s quick twitch and agility translates over to the defensive side with how well he was able to stick to opponents. Can cover on outside receivers or move into the slot.
