Continue ReadingAs the spring 7v7 circuit comes to a conclusion for most of the athletes in Kansas, under-the-radar prospects and higher profile names alike look to continue drawing the attention of college coaches. As we approach the summer, more colleges will be hosting on-campus camps and recruiting services will host more “exposure” combines and camp series nationally. I got a chance to get out this past weekend to scout some Kansas DB prospects at the KC Varsity Combine hosted at Turner High in KCK.
Martell Buchanan
Martell Buchanan
Martell Buchanan will be a new face on the Kansas side, as he’s transferring across state lines to Blue Valley for his final prep season. The 6’2″ Safety was impressive at the KC Varsity Combine this past weekend showing smooth hips on his transitions and range from his safety position. Martell doesn’t have alot of wasted motion and plays with discipline and patience. The class of 2024 product is as good a DB as I’ve seen in Johnson County and should rank amongst the top of a solid group of returning safeties in the area.
Maxwell Barnes
Maxwell Barnes
Barnes showed his technique and discipline during the DB individual drills Sunday at the KC Varsity Combine. The 2024 CB has active feet and looked most comfortable in soft press during drills. He had patient hands on press and good hands catching the football. He’s going to a key member of an experienced returning secondary at Blue Valley Northwest. He showed enough ability this past weekend to spark some intrigue from some coaches and should be on some recruiting boards this fall.
Daniel McVay
Daniel McVay
I’ve gotten a chance to check out McVay multiple times this spring playing on the 7v7 circuit. The Class of ’24 Free State cornerback is always scrappy and always working on his craft. That’s something you love to see in a DB prospect. His footwork and explosiveness are strengths of his right now, but he’s going to have to commit to adding some bulk to his frame this off-season. He’s a confident player and loves to compete. He understood the assignment at the KC Varsity Combine this past weekend as he was always up towards the front of the line in drills getting reps and trying to be seen by the scouts.

Williams is an experienced and versatile DB prospect who is already on the radar of several regional small school programs. As he works the 7v7 and now camp circuit, Johnnie is looking to garner interest from more programs with his play. The ‘24 DB is a vocal leader on the field and is an extension of his coach. He plays with a lot of emotion and is very active in the secondary. He has good ball skills, tracking and attacking the football. He somed his versatility at the KC Varsity Combine lining up in press during 1v1s and showing his cover skills. Eyes will be on him for sure this fall as he works to carry his off-season work into his senior season.
Trey Williams Trey Williams 5’8″ | 170 lbs | DB Blue Valley Southwest | 2024 State KS is another DB prospect looking to turn heads in what seems to be a deep secondary at Blue Valley Northwest. I’ve seen Williams several times during 7v7, and he’s a competitor and always working to improve his technique. He is quicker than fast and plays with good bend in his stance. He doesn’t get caught with his hips too high, so he transitions well and explodes out of breaks. He has good ball skills and attacks the ball at the highest point on throws. He got a chance to show off his fundamentals and field awareness at the KC Varsity Combine this past Sunday. He told me he plans to go to the next upcoming KCVC and just continue to build and get more opportunities to showcase his skillset.
