It is time to start looking at some signal callers in the class of 2024 to keep an eye on for this upcoming season. In this article, we are going to look at some quarterback prospects with the potential to have strong seasons in 2023. Let’s ease into the week with a look at the quarterback position.
Cole Welliver Cole Welliver 6'6" | 215 lbs | QB Marcus | 2024 State TX -Flower Mound Marcus-6’6” 200-Pounds
The Marcus High School product does a great job of reading the coverage and making good decisions with the football. Welliver is a quarterback that does not just lock in on one wide receiver. He does an excellent job of finding the open receiver and moving the ball down the field. Welliver has a good sense of the pocket and can extend plays long enough to find the open target. He has the potential for a big season in 2023.
Michael Hawkins Michael Hawkins 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Frisco Emerson | 2024 State TX -Frisco Emerson-6’2” 195-Pounds
One of the most athletic prospects at the quarterback position in the class of 2024. Michael Hawkins Michael Hawkins 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Frisco Emerson | 2024 State TX is an accurate passer. He can fit the ball into some tight windows and has no problem testing opposing defenses with the deep ball. The mobility that Hawkins possesses is another area of his game that opposing defenses must attempt to defend. The Oklahoma commitment has the opportunity to put up some big numbers this upcoming season for Emerson.
Arrington Maiden Arrington Maiden 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB College Station | 2024 State TX -College Station-6’2” 195-Pounds
The College Station signal caller does a great job of standing tall in the pocket. Maiden can throw with touch or put a little gas on it and fit the ball into some tight windows. He moves around well in the pocket and can extend the play while keeping his eyes down the field. Maiden does a good job of knowing when to use his legs to pick up yards and extend drives. I look for Maiden to have a strong 2023 season for College Station. He is a prospect to watch out for this season at the quarterback position.
Mabrey Mettauer Mabrey Mettauer 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB The Woodlands | 2024 State TX -The Woodlands-6’6” 225-Pounds
Mabrey Mettauer Mabrey Mettauer 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB The Woodlands | 2024 State TX is a quarterback that can hurt you with his arm as well as his legs. He uses his 6’6” frame well to scan the field. Mettauer is an accurate passer and is impressive with his accuracy on the deep passes. The ability to scramble and pick up yards on the ground is another trait that college scouts are impressed with. Mettauer does not look to get out of bounds, instead he chooses to run over opposing defenders. Mettauer has the potential to have an impressive season in 2023.
Derek (DJ) Lagway Derek (DJ) Lagway 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Willis | 2024 State TX -Willis-6’3” 210-Pounds
Derek (DJ) Lagway Derek (DJ) Lagway 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Willis | 2024 State TX is a prospect that will light up the Friday night skies this fall. He has a strong arm, and he does a great job of throwing his receivers open. Lagway can fit the ball into some tight windows. As effective as he is at throwing the football, he is just as impressive when he escapes the pocket and uses his legs. Lagway has the speed needed to escape defenders and is dangerous in the open field. The Willis product has the talent and potential to have a strong season.
