With a mix of size, speed, and agility, these players are poised to become the game-changers their teams need to succeed. Whether they’re breaking tackles, making cuts, or accelerating down the field, each of these five running backs has something special to offer. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at each player’s strengths and what they bring to the game.
Dickman is a dynamic playmaker on the field. With his excellent speed and quickness, he is always looking to break off big runs and beat defenders to the sideline. He is a true home run threat every time he touches the ball. Despite his small frame, he is a tenacious runner who never shies away from contact and can break arm tackles with ease. In addition to his skills as a running back, he is versatile enough to line up at quarterback and give the defense a different look. However, his lack of size may be a concern when it comes to durability and taking hits at the next level. Although he may not continue as a running back in college, Lucas is too good of a talent to not put on the field.
Thomas Gorges
Thomas Gorges
Leading one of the best teams in the metro, Gorges is willing to do whatever it takes to win. Thomas has good speed and agility, allowing him to make a sharp cut at the line of scrimmage and get past defenders. He is a patient runner who waits for his blocks to develop and then explodes through the hole. He does not shy away from contact, and often fights for extra yards after the initial hit. His up and coming stiff arm is a weapon that he uses effectively to keep defenders at bay. However, his size is a concern, as he can be easily brought down by bigger defenders. He has had the most success running behind his pulling guards and executing zone run schemes, using his quickness to get through gaps in the defense. I see him and Jackson King Jackson King 6’3″ | 190 lbs | QB Bishop Carroll | 2024 State KS creating a scary duo in that backfield next fall.
William Owens‘ size and strength are immediately apparent, as he is able to shrug off would-be tacklers with ease. His stiff arm is a weapon, and defenders have trouble bringing him down when he has a full head of steam. Despite his size, he is not just a power runner, as he has shown some elusiveness with jukes and cuts. His angry running style combined with his ability make him impossible to tackle solo. However, there is a caveat, as all of his film is from the junior varsity level. It remains to be seen how he will fare against tougher competition, but his physical tools suggest that he could be a dominant force at the varsity level if he continues to develop. It is no secret that Owens has the tools to be a very special player very soon.
Highlights
Darrell Adams
Darrell Adams
Adams is not like the other backs on this list, as he makes a living paving roads for other running backs to run through. That’s right, Darrell is a fullback. In fact, Adams is a classic bulldozer type, with impressive power and tenacity. He is a hard-nosed runner who does not shy away from contact, and is able to break tackles with his strength and determination. Despite his lack of height, he is able to generate surprising speed and momentum, making him a difficult player to bring down. While his lack of film may make it difficult to assess his full potential, his physicality and drive make him a valuable asset in any short-yardage situation. It would be a treat to see Adams clear the way for other West backs like Hardyway to speed through.
Maiser Zakholy
Maiser Zakholy
Adding one more fullback to complete the list, there is a promising star in Valley Center’s folds at the moment. Zakholy has the size and strength to be a dominant force in the backfield. He is a natural blocker and takes pride in creating holes for his running backs. In addition to his blocking ability, he is also a capable receiver out of the backfield, and can line up in a variety of formations to help the offense march down the field in many different roles. He has even been known to line up as a traditional running back and make plays with his speed and agility. Despite not having much varsity film, his skills and versatility on the field make him a valuable asset to any team. Maiser is a player that has the potential to be a nightmare for all linebackers across the city.
