McGinnis impressed as a junior with his arm strength and athleticism. At 6’3” 210 lbs. he’s a strong pocket passer that can drive the ball with ease at the short and intermediate levels and push the ball vertically with touch. Smooth mechanics and footwork in the pocket with an over the top delivery. He shows a good ability to make off platform and on the run throws without sacrificing arm strength or accuracy. He’s got good field vision and can use his athleticism to avoid pressure and make plays with his legs on designed runs or when flushed outside the pocket. In his first year as a starter at Brophy, he threw for almost 1,200 yards and six touchdowns while completing 60% of his passes, would like to see him clean up his interceptions but expect him to make a significant jump going into his senior year. Also a very good lacrosse player.
Highlights
At 6’3” 240 lbs. Buckley doesn’t have the typical frame of a high school QB but his skillset and stats speak for themselves. He had a monster junior season where he threw for 2,640 yards with 45 touchdowns and was selected to the All Arizona Republic Team, 2A All-Conference team, and voted Region Offensive Player of the Year. As a QB, he’s very calm and collected going through his progression. He shows good pocket awareness and mobility to feel and avoid pressure, keeping his eyes downfield for a target. He’s got a big arm that can throw the deep ball with good trajectory/touch and can also layer the ball over second level defenders. He does a good job anticipating and throwing his receivers open with timing. He makes quick decisive decisions and is a tough tackle when he tucks it and runs. He’s a bruiser when he gets going downhill and initiates contact to overpower defenders at the POA. Broke the school record for touchdowns in a career and wouldn’t be surprised to see him lead 2A in passing again in 2023.
Weber had a breakout junior year at Cienega throwing for 1,750 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 68% of his passes. At 6’0” 180 lbs. he’s a smooth and savvy athlete that can make plays with both his arm and his legs. As a passer, he sees the whole field and processes information quickly to go through his progression and make smart decisions with the football, only threw four interceptions on 184 attempts. Love his patience as he goes through his reads and allows throwing lanes to develop. Good arm talent, flashes the ability to throw from different arm angles and platforms while also showing he can mix up velocities to throw a catchable ball. Does a good job maneuvering through the pocket and stepping up to escape pressure and has the ability to improvise and create on the fly. Finished the 2022 season strong after a tough early schedule and would expect him to build off that in 2023.
