The offseason is full of prospect breakdowns based on film reviews and here’s another example of that as we take a look and deep dive on three 2024 quarterbacks with incredibly high upsides as they go into their senior seasons. Most people would agree that the top quarterback in the class is Connor Moberly Connor Moberly 6'4" | 200 lbs | QB Southeast Polk | 2024 State IA out of Southeast Polk but he’s going to have some company at the top with these three quarterbacks, who all bring something different to the table when it comes to running an offense.
Our first quarterback on today’s breakdown is Marshalltown signal caller Dalen Huston Dalen Huston 6’4″ | 205 lbs | QB Marshalltown | 2024 State IA and in terms of quarterbacks with high upside, Huston is at the top of the list in the 2024 class. Now, full disclosure, his future as a prospect might be more as an athlete as he has a high upside to play multiple positions at the next level. Huston’s film from last season definitely puts him in the conversation for one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the state, regardless of class. Huston passes the eye test at 6’4 and over 200 pounds. Huston is also a playmaker on the basketball floor so athleticism is clearly not a problem for the two-sport standout. On the football field, Huston has a very strong arm but the majority of his production was in the ground game as a very powerful and effective runner. He put up numbers as a passer as well but based on his production alone, he was a very dangerous runner. The film showcases that as well. Huston could very well end up playing a few different positions at the next level but one thing is for sure, he has next level talent and when you’re talking about prospects with upside, Huston has a very bright future.

Out of the three quarterbacks on this breakdown, the safest bet feels like it’s Glenwood signal caller Nolan Mount Nolan Mount 6’0″ | 180 lbs | QB Shenandoah | 2024 State IA . Putting on the film from the last few seasons, a few things really stood out. The first was that Mount had some really good talent around him and he did a good job of getting the ball to their standouts. And then there were quite a few throws that we watched on his film that made us say “wow” out loud while watching. There were a few times where we thought the ball was going one way and it went another and the play ended up being a big one for the Glenwood offense. Mount also put up some monster numbers over the last few seasons that were good enough to rewrite some of the record books when it comes to throwing the football. Mount is an absolute magician in the backfield in playaction situations. He does a great job of confusing and slowing down the defensive front seven just enough for his receivers to get open. The biggest takeaways were his ability in playaction passes and then some of those “wow” throws that we just haven’t seen that much of from many other quarterbacks.

And our final quarterback on this breakdown is Ankeny Centennial signal caller Trenton Smith Trenton Smith 6’2″ | 205 lbs | QB Ankeny Centennial | 2024 State IA and he’s in the same conversation as Huston in terms of quarterback prospects who just look the part physically on film. But just like we said with Huston, film can always be deceiving in terms of judging physical size but Smith definitely passes the eye test. While he shares that trait with Huston, he also shares the playmaking throws trait with Mount as Smith made some pretty great throws throughout this film. Specifically, some of the throws that he would make outside of the pocket while rolling to his left were outstanding when you look at the accuracy and distance down the field. Then there’s the arm strength that Smith is bringing to the table as the ball just leaps out of his hands and it gets to his target in a hurry. When Smith needs to rifle a fastball down field, he’s able to do it in the blink of an eye. Because of that, Smith is in a position where he can gamble more and put the ball into some tight windows that other quarterbacks would avoid. He also shows good pocket awareness and can tuck it and run when necessary.
