Continue ReadingAs we continue to scout the Spring ‘23 7v7 circuit for some of Kansas’s top defensive back prospects, Wichita proved to have a wealth of talent this past weekend at The Capital City Shootout in Topeka. Kansas Elite 15u impressed again with its solid secondary led by Freshman ballhawk Tremaine Savage, but it was the Wichita Wheat who stood out the most with exceptional talent in every class.
Stocky athlete with a strong build and explosive movement, Finley was able to be a playmaker on both sides of the ball this past weekend. We’ll focus on his defensive prowess at The Capital City Shootout in this report. “Baby Air” flipped between Nickel and Safety in the games scouted on Sunday and was equally effective. He made good reads and is very explosive breaking on routes. His offensive experience showed with his ball skills. He plays a mature game for his age and isn’t intimidated. I expect Finlay, Jr. to continue to be a menace in the Wheat’s 15u secondary all spring and make a name for himself as an elite ballplayer at Derby for the next 4 years.
A’maree Bohannan
A’maree Bohannan
Another two-way athlete out of Wichita who excelled in the secondary for The Wheat on Sunday at The Capital City Shootout. Bohannan has nice size and length with a frame that’s going to fill out more over the course of his career. Like most of the Wheat DBs, he has the ability to play physical in press coverage and play off coverage from multiple positions in the secondary. He has smooth hips and decent speed. His experience as a quarterback helps him make smart plays on defense. Look for him to continue to be a solid defender throughout the spring and summer.
Jakdyn Mossallah
Jakdyn Mossallah
Watching this kid play Sunday at The Capital City Shootout was worth the hour drive over to Topeka. Mossallah plays with a cornerback’s mentality and isn’t afraid to gamble to make a big play. He plays with a ton of confidence and often got in the heads of his opponents. He had a big interception in the endzone in a game Sunday and several well defended plays overall. A true CB, Mossallah should be one of the top CB prospects in a talented East High secondary in the Fall.
Another talented DB from East High School, Wishom was a key player in the secondary for the 18U Capital City Shootout champions Wichita Wheat on Sunday. He’s a quick twitch athlete who did an excellent job covering slot receivers and robbing underneath and intermediate routes in the middle of the field. Like other Wheat DBs, Wishom is physical and plays with no shortage of confidence. Playing in a loaded secondary this Spring should help further develop Wishom into one of the top DBs to watch for this upcoming Fall.
Nehamiah Fleming
Nehamiah Fleming
Watching this Class of ’24 prospect at The Capital City Shootout on Sunday, the East High junior seemed most comfortable up in WRs faces playing physical. He’s strong at the point of contact on his jams and plays with good technique. He transitions and runs well and was able to routinely stay in phase with WRs. Fleming showed good ball skills and made a big play down the stretch in the championship game to help seal the win. Another East High/Wheat product that I expect to carry his 7v7 momentum into his senior season in the Fall.
Camari Gaddis
Camari Gaddis
Gaddis is a player that I’ve watched on film several times, but I got a chance to scout in person this past Sunday at The Capital City Shootout. The senior CB didn’t disappoint live. He displayed great fundamentals in multiple coverages from man to zone. He plays with great patience and doesn’t allow the receiver’s tempo cause him to panic. Gaddis showed quickness and is a heady defender who didn’t bite on double moves and was able to make plays on the ball. The Derby High product possesses the tools to play on Saturdays and should continue to rise throughout the 7v7 circuit with the Wichita Wheat.
