On the top of that list are Derek Pennington, Stellan Bowman, and Carter Herriman. These three LBs have all garnered some recent attention, have received a few MAC offers, and are trending toward Power 5 offers. Check them out!
Derek Pennington Jr. | Caledonia | Hudl
I had heard a ton about Derek over the past few years, but I never fully appreciated his game until I saw him at the State Championship. He’s a relentless attacker on defense, as Derek is able to diagnose a play and attack the ball carrier quickly. He’s a key part of the swarming Caledonia defense, and the number of times he was in on a tackle, even when injured, was very impressive. Playing for a top D1 program in a great league, he’s got the skill and competition to Power 5 programs.
Stellan Bowman | East Kentwood | Hudl
Another slightly underrated West Michigan linebacker is Stellan Bowman. Stellan has recently garnered some well-deserved attention from Detroit-area media and has earned offers from a few MAC programs + Army. He also earned 3-star honors from 247. What I see in Stellan is a very well-rounded game. He’s a linebacker with no clear weaknesses but less elite traits than some others. This is a situation where if Stellan commits to physical improvement this offseason, then becomes a bit more aggressive and intelligent in-season, his stock will rise significantly.
Carter Herriman | Davison | Hudl
Carter was the most impressive linebacker I watched in the 2022 season. When watching his tape, it’s obvious that he possesses great skills as a run-stopper and pass-defender, but his real strength lies in his intangibles. This is a player who loves the game of football, is a leader, and is ultra-competitive. He currently holds offers from 3 MAC schools as well as Army and Air Force. With that sort of attention, he’s not far from breaking into Power 5 territory. In my eyes, Carter deserves a shot at a P5 school!
