The first annual Prep Redzone 7v7 tournament here in Tennessee kicked off Saturday morning at both Blackman and Oakland high schools with teams in town from multiple states along with some local flavor as well.
It was a long day of action with tons of prospects to scout and watch develop, play throughout the day, so here is our Day One breakdown of what stood out the most and some things to look forward to on Sunday.
Strong Pool Play Action From Local Teams
Before we even touch on the local teams, we have to mention that the out-state programs handled Day One the best as teams like TFP Flite Boyz (Indianapolis), 501 7v7 (Kentucky) and C4 Black Ops (Texas/Oklahoma) all went 3-0 and have placed themselves at the top of bracket play on Sunday.
Now onto the local flavor….Three teams in particular had strong opening showings with the Mid-TN Wolfpack kicking off the day going 2-1. The Wolfpack, based out of Nashville started off strong with a 28-12 win over TN Stars Red then finished off the day with victory after a game sealing interception from Centennial senior safety Cody Williamson Cody Williamson 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB Centennial | 2024 TN .
TN Select proceeded to have a strong day as well, going 2-1 and beating a pair of good programs in C4 Nation and Indy Select South.
The surprise local team who put forth a great opening tourney performance was the Mid-TN Bandits. Based out of the Murfreesboro area, the Bandits went 2-1 on the day and looked impressive on several occasions throughout their three games.
All three of these local teams in the Wolfpack, Select and Bandits all received top seeds for bracket play on Sunday and all three have a great chance to win and advance, towards the championship game.
While those three programs had good starts to the tourney, other local teams did not but that doesn’t mean they can’t bounce back on Sunday. Two teams in particular to watch on Sunday as sleeper teams are the TN Savages (1-2), led by Mt. Pleasant quarterback Nick Brown Nick Brown 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Mt. Pleasant | 2024 State TN and Phenom Supreme (1-2) from Memphis, who have a bevy of athletic playmakers, including Caden Marshall Caden Marshall 6'2" | 210 lbs | LB Henry Co. | 2024 State TN (Henry Co.) Cam Davis Cam Davis 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Westview | 2024 State TN (Westview HS) and Christian Brothers junior defender Ethan Johnson Ethan Johnson 5'11" | 200 lbs | LB Christian Brothers | 2025 TN .
Out of State Talent Shines in the Boro
– If you are a coach or a scout, Murfreesboro is the place to be because not only do we have local talent on hand but we also have a large group of out of state prospects that impressed many on hand Saturday while pushing their recruiting stocks even further. One guy who really stood out the most to me was 2025 East St. Louis (IL) athlète Justin Price. Sporting a nice physique and long arms, Price stood out on several occasions displaying his dynamic game changing abilities and breakaway speed. Look for Price to garner tons of recruiting interest over the coming months.
At the moment, it’s unknown if anybody else at the PRZ 7v7 Tourney on Saturday noticed Iowa City (IA) and Fire Dragons Blaze linebacker/tight end Sam Kueter but I sure did. The intriguing thing about this Midwest senior is that he started at offensive guard last year for his high school team at 190 pounds but he has the frame, makeup and physical traits of a college linebacker. He showed nice coverage skills along with high football knowledge while proving to me that this guy can play in college on the defensive side of the ball.
– 2025 Indy Select defensive back Chris Wilson was another out of state product that had flashes of brilliance on Saturday. This Kentucky native played a key role on defense for his Select team, locking down several opposing receivers while also displaying nice athleticism and speed. Wilson will certainly be someone I keep an eye on moving forward.
Day One Notes …..
– Playing for 931 Mafia, Shelbyville Central (TN) athlete Micah Threatt Micah Threatt 6'1" | 185 lbs | ATH Shelbyville Central | 2024 State TN was a very impressive talent to me during Day One action as he showed off a nice physique along with outstanding versatility, shining on both sides of the ball. He was definitely the go-to guy on offense as was targeted heavily throughout the day and I honestly do not remember him dropping one pass. I am unsure as to what position Threatt plays on the next play but this guy is very talented and certainly an under the radar prospect that needs to be looked at harder.
– A pair of Centennial seniors had strong showings on Saturday and were key performers in the Mid-TN Wolfpack going 2-1 on the first day of the PRZ 7v7 Tourney. Early on, both Jyrine Otey Jyrine Otey 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Centennial | 2024 TN and D.J. Curll D.J. Curll 6'2" | 205 lbs | LB Centennial | 2024 State TN had game changing moments as Otey produced a huge interception at safety while Curll hauled in a touchdown reception that broke the game wide open towards a Wolfpack victory.
Both of these senior Cougars are putting together strong offseasons thus far which should help them show out during camp season this summer while also becoming elite players for their Centennial team in the Fall.
– Even though the TN Savages went 1-2 on the day, 2025 Ensworth (TN) linebacker Sam Haley Sam Haley 6'4" | 215 lbs | LB Ensworth | 2025 State TN was a definite stand out for them. Haley is a big boy that moves well for his size and he displayed that nicely on Saturday but showing off his skills at tight end. He also continued to show development at linebacker where he is comfortable making all the calls while playing with a high competitive edge. Haley holds multiple D1 offers at the moment, including one from South Carolina and I expect many others to follow suit as they gather more info on this Mid-Tennessee defender.
– TN Stars senior quarterback Brian Rager Brian Rager 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Liberty Creek | 2024 State TN (Liberty Creek) had a very nice day at Blackman High School as the Wolves 6’4 passer was clean and efficient throughout the day while displaying decisive decision making. Rager is a calm, cool customer behind center that doesn’t get bothered by much and you could see that in his performance on Saturday. More development must continue for this Mid-Tennessee signal caller but I can definitely see the progression already made.
– I want to finish this article by giving major props to Jake Lemming, Vince Calistro and other Prep Redzone employees for putting together a stellar 7v7 tourney that I might say has been the best I have been a part of so far this year. This is a well structured event that had everybody in attendance happy with how things were going. Day two should be just as well run and exciting with tons of action during the bracket portion of the tournament.
