Not when you finish the Cam Newton Foundation Tournament with a winning record and get the royal treatment on a scheduled tour of Mountain West Conference member UNLV.
Legacy finished pool play Saturday in Las Vegas, NV with a 3-1 record before suffering a last-second loss Sunday in the their first game of the single elimination bracket round.
Nonetheless, Legacy coach Ramar Watson was pleased with how his team performed on a big stage against nationally prominent teams, especially the defensive side of the ball.
“Our defense played very well,” Watson told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “This might be the best tournament they’ve played. They made a major impact throughout the weekend. They were flying to the ball, getting interceptions and breaking up balls. They were having fun dong it, too.”
Defensive standouts included Alonzo Hulland (Manzano; 3 INT on the weekend), Marvin Watson (Manzano), Frank Hren Frank Hren 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Albuquerque | 2024 State NM (Albuquerque High) and Demajaye Kindred (Manzano). West Mesa defensive back Tavon Archibald Tavon Archibald 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB West Mesa | 2024 State NM joined the Legacy for the first time this year.
Quarterback Kelly Stevens (Las Cruces), Elias Gutierrez (West Mesa) and Omarrion Kennedy (Manzano) were offensive standouts.
In addition to competing at the Cam Newton tournament, Legacy took time to tour the UNLV football facilities and watch a spring practice. New Rebels head coach Barry Odom hosted the players.
“Watching practice was awesome,” Watson said. “My uncle played at UNLV and he was drafted by the Raiders. He played in the Super Bowl. I got to see his name on the board where they listed the guys who have played in the NFL. The UNLV coaches told me they liked Tavon and Kelly. They asked me to send them film of this season.”
What’s next for Legacy? They head to Dallas on April 15-16 for a tournament at AT&T Stadium (a/k/a ‘Jerry’s World’), home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Later in April, they’ll compete in a single day jamboree at Bernalillo High School.
