The class of 2024 is loaded with talented players that are go-to playmakers for their teams with significant value as recruiting prospects. Colorado has consistently produced high school athletes who go on to be impact players at every level in college, making the Box State one of the more underrated areas to recruit.
This article will take a brief look at three different must-watch quarterback and wide receiver duos from the class of 2024 who are heading into their senior seasons.
Monarch High School – 4A
The Monarch Coyotes completed the 2022 season with an overall record of 5-6 (2-2 in league).
Asher Ewing
Asher Ewing
Ewing is one of the more surprising quarterback gems who racked up 2,341 passing yards and 21 touchdowns, giving him a legitimate sleeper status. He is a mobile quarterback with excellent arm strength, good accuracy, quick acceleration, and impressive overall speed. He can extend plays while keeping his eyes downfield and thread the needle to hit his target while on the run. His ability to get his hips around and the ball out of his hands while evading pressure is one of the many reasons to circle his name. Ewing has serious potential to be a sought-after prospect for a college program, and his WR1 will help keep the spotlight in their direction.
Owen Mellish
Owen Mellish
Mellish is a solid athlete with good size and speed. He is a sound route runner who gets upfield immediately out of his releases and has explosive breaks. He is a strong runner as a ball carrier and has excellent vision that he uses in conjunction with his overall athleticism and speed to exploit creases between defenders to rack up yards after the catch. Mellish is another low-flyer on the radar, but expect that to change this fall.
Lutheran High School – 3A
The Lutheran Lions finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 11-3 (5-0 in league) and as the 3A state runner-up.
Daugaard is a talented quarterback whose stock value continues to increase. He has good form and footwork in the pocket, giving him a strong foundation for his mechanics. He has a strong arm with sharp releases and accurate ball placement. His impressive athleticism allows him to extend plays or take off and run for a significant gain, making him a solid prospect for an RPO system. Daugaard’s junior season elevated his status as one of the better quarterbacks in the state who paired perfectly with one of his standout wide receivers.
Ciccio was the leading receiver for the Lions, finishing with 1,240 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He is an explosive receiver with shifty releases and crafty route running coming out of the slot. He has the quickness and overall speed to burn secondaries as an underneath and deep threat. He has reliable hands and immediately gets upfield after the catch while turning into a physical ball carrier. Ciccio’s junior performance proved him to be the clear WR1 for the Lions, accounting for nearly half of Daugaard’s total passing yards and more than half of the touchdowns.
Manual High School – 1A
The Manual Thunderbolts ended the 2022 season with an overall record of 5-4 (3-2 in league).
Cartail Dickey
Cartail Dickey
Dickey is an instant standout as a quarterback because of his size and frame structure. It is common to assume he is an interior lineman or possible fullback until you watch him throw. He is a lefty with a huge arm and a solid pocket presence. His impressive athleticism allows him to escape pressure and extend plays with his legs once the pocket breaks down. He does a great job at keeping his eyes downfield while attacking the line of scrimmage when on the run, showing that his main focus is to get the ball to his receiver. However, if all his targets are covered, Dickey can use his running abilities to pick up yards on the ground while using his size and strength to barrel through contact. Dickey has the qualities needed to be a successful college quarterback for the right program.
Deamonte Maynard
Deamonte Maynard
Not only did Maynard finish as the leading receiver for the Thunderbolts, but he was also the team’s leading rusher and return man. He has outstanding speed that is easily identifiable on film. His overall strength and determination as a ball carrier make him difficult to bring down, giving him the ability to gain yards after first contact. He is a dangerous athlete who is a nightmare for opponents in open spaces. Maynard is an absolute show-stopper and one of the more talented players in the class to fly so low under the radar.
