The first part of this series primarily featured defensive prospects. But in Part II, we’ll be taking a look at the other side of the ball. Four of the five prospects in this piece took on prominent roles in 2022, and one prospect showed flashes of being a two-way star. If folks enjoyed the first group of players highlighted in this series, then they’ll really be impressed with this bunch.
Quarterback:
Stocton Timbrook – Abilene, 6’2”, 195, QB
This upcoming senior class features some notable arms in the rankings, and more unranked quarterbacks are likely to emerge throughout this year. One quarterback in particular that folks should look out for is Stocton Timbrook of Abilene. After three straight winless seasons, the Abilene Cowboys were in the victory column four times in 2022, which was their highest win total since 2018. The success they had this past fall is a reflection of Timbrook’s improved play. Timbrook threw for over 1,700 yards and 14 touchdowns, which led to more points for the Cowboys’ offense. His arm and mobility fit the mold of a high-level college quarterback. Timbrook still has room to grow, but he’s a prospect with tremendous upside and should continue to improve this year.
Athletes:
Lucas Dickman – Eisenhower, 5’8”, 160, ATH
Class 5A featured a number of dynamic playmakers during the ’22 campaign. But, one playmaker that hasn’t received enough praise for his breakout season is Lucas Dickman of Eisenhower. While the Tigers had their struggles last fall, Dickman emerged as a bright spot for them, and contributed in a multitude of ways. Dickman took snaps at quarterback, running back, and was Eisenhower’s top return man. All in all, Dickman accumulated over 1,000 all-purpose yards, which earned him a 5A All-State Honorable Mention nod. He is without a doubt one of the most explosive athletes in this class. His acceleration and vision in the open-field gives him a chance to break off a big gain at any moment. Don’t let his size fool you either, he’s a strong runner with great balance.
Ray Smith III – Olathe East, 6’2”, 225, ATH
There are only a few prospects that bring a high-level of intensity to both sides of the ball in this class. One that has yet to be highlighted is Ray Smith III of Olathe East. Two words can easily describe his play style, and that is physical and ruthless. Offensively, if he gets a full head of steam going, he’ll run through just about any defender. On the other side, he’ll fight through any blocker, and is one of the hardest hitting linebackers in the class. While his strong running is exciting to watch, his future is likely at outside linebacker. That’s where he earned All-Sunflower League honors, and where he looks the most natural. He’s a backer that could generate some buzz this off-season.
Offensive Line:
Andrew Kenney – Manhattan, 6’4”, 285, OL
When a program wins a state title, there are several players that had a hand in achieving this goal. Typically, the skill position players receive a majority of the praise. But for the Manhattan Indians, their offensive line was instrumental during their perfect season. Especially the play from Andrew Kenney. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound junior earned the starting job at right tackle in 2022, and his presence made a huge difference. Kenney was phenomenal in pass protection and in the run game. He possesses solid footwork, quick hands to neutralize a pass rush, and he has the athleticism to work to the second level. The state champ earned 6A All-State honors last season, but this year, look for him to be a candidate for 1st Team All-State.
Kooper Tichenor – Holcomb, 6’2”, 285, OL
To end this second Watch List for the Class of ’24, we’re taking a look at a hog flying way under the radar. With the exception of Kaedin Massey Kaedin Massey 6'8" | 280 lbs | OL Lyndon | 2024 State KS , not enough small-school offensive linemen have received praise for their play in 2022. For example, Kooper Tichenor of Holcomb is a prospect that has been severely overlooked. The 6-foot-2, 285-pound center manned the middle of an offensive line that helped produce 34 points per game and over 2,400 yards on the ground. Tichenor displays nimble feet, and shows a good understanding of his blocking assignments. His play during his junior year earned him 1st Team All-GWAC honors, as well as a 3A All-State Honorable Mention nod. Tichenor is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by the right program.
