Who are some of the top running backs in the 2024 class across Idaho? Find out here with a in-depth film breakdown and analysis!
McGee is one of a kind when it comes to playing in the backfield as he has the ability to do it all. McGee shows a unique feel at running back having spent time at quarterback and wide receivers for the Mavericks in 2022. It shows up in his ability to feel running lanes and set up blocks. Shows a good forward lean and is not afraid of contact in the hole. Shows the ability to have game breaking straight line speed in the open. Has a really good feel for when to make a cut or put his head down for extra yards. He is a willing blocker in pass protection that sets up against blitzing linebackers and has a strong punch to go along with a strong base. Where McGee really excels is his receiving ability out of the backfield. He has natural pass catching hands that doesn’t allow the football to get into his body. Really can track the football and his best ability is in his route running where his time as a wide receiver really shows. He is able to get in and out of breaks with ease and creates a huge matchup problem against linebackers in space. This should be a bright senior year for McGee as he is one of the top returning athletes in the state of Idaho.
Del-Rio is a one of a kind speed back in the all sense of the word speed. Del-Rio can flat out fly one of the fastest running backs in the entire state of idaho you can see his speed jump out on film. He is a home run hitter and running back where if he gets the edge of the defense or a crease through the line of scrimmage he can take it all the way. He is not just built for speed though Del-Rio has a toughness about him only seeing him play live will show you. He is not the biggest back on the field and constantly take crushing hits in Meridian’s Wing-T offense but the guy just keeps getting back up. He is not afraid to lower his shoulder and meet defenders in the hole which is unusual for someone with his type of game breaking speed. He can be used in a variety of different ways but due to the offense he plays in we haven’t seen his ability out of the backfield used as often. Del-Rio is still a special player for the Warriors as he can really change the game everytime he touches the football.
Byington is your typical bruiser at running back but he is more than just a ground out tough yards player, he really have a elite feel for playing the running back position. He has the ability to find the smallest creases in the defense and exploit it for big gains. A strong runner in his lower half he has good open field speed but makes most of his yards running over the top of defenders. Probably one of the hardest players to bring down one on one in the state as he does not shy away from contact and at times looks like he is seeking it out. Always seems to fall forward which is one of the best traits a running back can have. Byington also has a unique ability for a back of his size and strength is that he has really soft hands. His ability to catch the football out in the flat was used quite frequently by the Warriors this season and the soon to be senior made the most of his opportunities catching the football with ease. He was also used in their down field passing attack and was a true nightmare for opossing linebackers in the play action game.
Highlights
EchoHawk is another absolute burner at running back with the ability to be a one play touchdown machine. He has a great feel in the back field of when to get north and south or make an amazing jump cut to the outside. He shows the ability to really find his pullers and create blocking angles for his lineman. It’s a unique ability that not all running backs possess. EchoHawk is also not the biggest running back but shows the strength and toughness of someone twice his size as you can see he will not be denied at the goaline. Where he really excels is in the open field as he maybe one of the hardest players to bring down in the open field as he could make many miss in a phone booth. Shows the ability to really get the the edge of the defense and has a elite feel for turning outside plays in to really big gains. Has good pass catching ability and could really turn into a weapon in the slot if he so chooses. Should have an outstanding year for Pocatello and will be one to watch for sure.
