They say “slow feet don’t eat,” and if that’s the case these guys have been FEASTING! In this article, we are featuring five of the shiftiest football players going into the 2023 season.
Isaiah McMorris Isaiah McMorris 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Bellevue West | 2024 State NE | 2024 | WR | Bellevue West | 6’0″ 175 lbs
You don’t become the state’s record holder in receptions in a season (90) and come a few yards from the season receiving yards record without having some twitch to you. Whether it’s during his route or after the catch, Isaiah has shown a tremendous ability to cut and shift directions on a dime. He runs a 4.47 40-yard time and he doesn’t seem to lose speed after a cut. On top of his athleticism and twitch, you add on Isaiah’s vision and you have a dangerous threat to score every time he touches the ball. His outstanding play and record-breaking season shot him up recruiting board with recent offers from Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Penn State, Kansas State, Kansas, and Texas Tech.
Thomas Spears Thomas Spears 5'7" | 145 lbs | ATH Ashland Greenwood | 2025 State NE | 2025 | DB/WR | Ashland-Greenwood | 5’7″ 145 lbs
One player that doesn’t get enough recognition is Ashland-Greenwood’s, Thomas Spears Thomas Spears 5'7" | 145 lbs | ATH Ashland Greenwood | 2025 State NE . My first impression of Thomas came at a 7v7 tournament last April where Thomas was skewering defenses left and right. When you watch his game tape you can see this same elusiveness transfers well to padded football. He is very quick with his cuts and jukes, using what seems like rubber ankles to shift on a dime. Spears has been making plays for the Blue Jays since becoming a two-way varsity starter as a freshman. Thomas’ twitch and explosiveness in his breaks make him a very tough receiver to cover and have helped him become a ball-hawking defender in the AG secondary.
Nolan Feller Nolan Feller 5'6" | 170 lbs | RB Millard South | 2024 State NE | 2024 | RB | Millard South | 5’6″ 170 lbs
Nolan got the nod as RB1 in the Patriot’s offense and ran away with it. Nolan used his speed, agility, and elusiveness to rush his way to 764 yards and six touchdowns. Nolan blew me away at the Stock Up Showcase and Warren Academy showcase where he performed very well in each combine drill session. Nolan ran a blazing 4.47 40-yard time at the Stock Up showcase and a 4.22 pro-agility at the Warren Academy showcase. Feller’s speed and lateral quickness make him such a tough running back to contain. He generates so much force in his cuts and explodes out of them every time. Now with plenty of varsity experience, expect a big year out of Nolan!
Keynan Cotton Keynan Cotton 5'10" | 185 lbs | ATH Omaha Westside | 2025 State NE | 2025 | DB/ATH | Omaha Westside | 5’10” 180 lbs
Keynan is a 2025 player with massive upside as a three-way threat at defensive back, receiver, and an emerging returner. Keynan’s track background has helped his explosiveness on the field. The area of Keynan’s game where his twitch is most evident is his route running and release. Cotton can shoot off the line very quickly and is very sharp with his cuts and route break-offs. His shiftiness also helps him keep up in coverage against some of the top receivers. He keeps his hips loose and feet ready to change direction. Very athletic, explosive, speedy, shifty player that is going to wreak havoc in 2023.
Keenan Valverde Keenan Valverde 5'7" | 160 lbs | RB Pierce | 2024 State NE | 2024 | RB | Pierce | 5’7″ 150 lbs
In a recent write-up covering Keenan, I described his play style as “bouncy” mostly because it’s so unique and hard to describe. At any given notice, he can cut, shift, juke, and jump his way to the open field. Valverde’s vision allows him to see the entire field and his quick twitch reactions help him slide through open lanes. Keenan has great lower body strength and balance that allows him to power through contact/arm tackles when cutting through lanes. He runs a 4.4 40-yard dash and Keenan’s breakout season ended with 1,900 rushing yards, 26 rushing touchdowns, and a state championship. Watch out for Keenan in 2023!
