Who are they? Let’s take a look…
Josiah Davis – Berrien
An explosive athlete who can make plays in all three phases of the game, Davis proved as a junior that he’s without a doubt one of the top overall athletes in the area. He has plenty of size at 6-foot-1 and 180+ pounds and has a natural feel for the game. An impressive defender at safety, Davis is a true playmaker both on offense, defense, and special teams. He’s a special player with the ball in his hands with excellent burst and acceleration. He also has a knack for making defenders miss in small spaces and in the open field. He glides as he runs and picks up a ton of yards both out of the backfield and in thee return game on special teams. The do-it-all player only carried the ball 104 times, but ended the season with 895 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging an eye-opening 8.6 yards per carry. He has great vision, but he also has a nice blend of speed and power, allowing him to run through defenses with ease in South Georgia. He has easy D1 potential and has the potential to have a monster senior season in 2023.
Fred Brown – Coffee
A shifty back with breakaway speed, Brown is one of the top backs in the area and showed that he’s a productive runner between the tackles. He shows quick feet, he’s balanced, and has one of the best spin moves of any rising senior in South Georgia. He’s tough to knock off balance and bring down to the ground, making him someone who always finds a way to get a few extra yards towards the end of runs. He’s coming off an excellent junior season where he rushed for 894 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was a scoring machine and led Coffee to an impressive 9-3 season. He ended the season on a high note, rushing for 229 yards and four touchdown in his final two games. The 5-foot-10 200-pounder breaks a lot of tackles and should see an opportunity to be the lead back next season as a senior. He’s a back to keep a close eye on in 2023
Trey Brenton – Thomas County Central
Another tough, tackle-breaking back to know. Brenton was one of the toughest backs that people still don’t know about. At 5-foot-10 185-pounds, Brenton runs with a physical presence and does a good job of dragging defenders extra yards at the end of runs. He’s put together well from a physical standpoint and has good vision. He’s got some wigglee for a bigger back and hits the hole hard down-hill. He helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a special season last year as they reached thee 6A semi-finals. He put the offense on his back at times, rushing for over 100 yards in four of his last five games. His best game came in the playoffs against an outstanding Lee County defense where he rushed for 187 yards and one touchdown. In total, Brenton rushed for 955 yards and 10 touchdowns. The more he ran, the better he was. Look for him to have a breakout season as a senior next fall. He’s someone who could possibly see some D1 interest come his way in the off-season.
