Having an elite quarterback on any team could result in an overall improvement in the team’s success from year to year. At the Prep Redzone Next Midwest Camp, an elite group of quarterbacks competed to become the best in the region. With some of the best quarterbacks that I have had a chance to evaluate, here is a look at the First-Team Quarterback group:
Cael Kongshaung Cael Kongshaung 6’3″ | 215 lbs | QB Iowa City | 2027 IA was one of the first quarterbacks that caught my eye during checking, he towered over most of the other athletes in the camp, standing at 6’3. It is fair to say, the Cael definitely passed the looks test as soon as he walked through the door. During warm-ups Cael throwing ability really began to show out as each of his throws became better than the next. During drill work, Cael displayed his ability to stay controlled in the pocket with seamless footwork and downfield vision. Cael then translated that over to his quick game throws, where the ball came out quickly and effortlessly and hit his targets almost exactly where he needed to hit them. Cael also has a knack for hitting targets on medium range throws over the middle and into the boundary. After making the Prep Redzone Next 2027 Watchlist, it is fair to say that Cael lived up to the hype that he brought from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cael was a no brainer for MVP out of this group, and it won’t be long until he is a no brainer pick for any elite college football program around the country.

Jayden Ellington Jayden Ellington 5’11” | 170 lbs | QB Althoff Catholic | 2027 IL was another quarterback in this group who impressed me more and more as the camp progressed. Coming out of the Belleville Area in Southern Illinois, Jayden is a dual-threat capable quarterback that can do almost anything on the football field. With the fastest 40, pro agility, and L-Drill Jayden competed at the highest level during test outs. Even with the impressive numbers that he picked up during testing, Jayden was always looking for pointers from coaches to see how he could improve down the road. On the run, Jayden can work out of the pocket smoothly and under control. Once he hits his landmark on his sprint-outs, he delivers a smooth and easy ball to his target. In the pocket, Jayden hit his quick game targets quickly and accurately. With his quick release, he is going to make it difficult for any pass rusher to touch him as they rush into the backfield. From my experience of watching him work, Jayden has the intangibles that make quarterbacks great. He is coachable, and hungry to become the best that he can be. With all of this being said, I am personally excited to watch him grow and develop into one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

Israel Abrams Israel Abrams 6’2″ | 160 lbs | QB IL is another kid out of this group that began to impress me as time went on during the camp. Standing at 6’3, Israel Abrams Israel Abrams 6’2″ | 160 lbs | QB IL already has the frame to be an elite quarterback at any level. Being one of the more quiet kids in the group, Israel snuck on to the scene and balled out in front of all of the coaches and writers who were lucky enough to watch him go to work. Being one of the stronger throwers in the group, Israel excelled in every drill he went through during instruction time and carried it over to the competition side of things as well. He has an absolute cannon for an arm and does really well with his deep ball placement, especially during one-on-one’s. Another thing that stood out to me was Israel’s quick and precise release during drills and delivering pin point accurate throws in the process. When it was all said an done, the quarterback coaches at the camp could not say enough good things about him and what he was capable of doing down the road. As Israel begins to translate this performance to the field, there is no telling where he may end up down the road.
Zane Johnson is another quarterback that coaches were raving about during camp. Coming out of the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Zane caught the attention of the writers and coaches at the camp. One of the biggest things that stood out to me during his performance was the insanely fast release that he had during the drill work portion of the camp. Zane has the capability to get the ball out of this hands in a blink all while placing the ball perfectly for his receivers. Having some of the better arm talent out of this group, Zane stood out with impressive footwork and timing as well, which is going to help make him one of the more elite quarterbacks in his class down the road. According to the coaches working with him, he was one of the most accurate throwers in the group and proved it during one-on-one’s During the competition segment of the camp, Zane placed his throws perfectly and completed more passes than most of the athletes in his group. It is no surprise that Zane has excelled at other marquee events much like this camp, and it won’t be long until he makes himself well-known across the country for his capabilities at quarterback.
