With offseason work picking up for the players returning for another high school season in the fall, now is the perfect time to note some of the top players to watch.
This article will list five linebackers from the class of 2025 who are on the verge of having a breakout junior season.
Villarreal is a player who is familiar with being under the spotlight. His second year as a varsity role player has put him on a path toward becoming one of the more prominent prospects in his class. He is the epitome of what teams expect from a leader, physically and mentally. His ability to read and react shows his physicality and overall understanding of the game. In addition to being a starting outside linebacker, Villarreal is also a backup quarterback, which undoubtedly adds to his advanced knowledge of the game.
Highlights
Hayes-Trusty is another player who needs little introduction and deserves attention because he is one of the top linebackers in his class. He has excellent awareness and vision which help him to diagnose offensive plays and get in the correct positions. His size and physicality make him a force in the middle of the field, especially on contact. Hayes-Trusty is a player expected to become a breakout prospect during his junior season.
Kai Shelton
Kai Shelton
Shelton is another newcomer with the potential to claim real estate under the spotlight. He has good instincts and does a great job defending against the run and finishing tackles. He is versatile enough to line up as an inside and outside backer, but he looks very comfortable playing from the interior of the box. His ability to come downhill and initiate contact shows his grasp of key reading and toughness. Shelton is new to the radar and on his way to having a breakout junior season.
Lettis is a radar pop-up who had an impressive season on one of the more dominant JV teams in the 4A classification. He has good size and strength, which mix perfectly with his relentless motor. He has the ability to line up as an inside backer but tends to dominate as an outside backer, especially when coming off the edge. Lettis has shown consistent improvement through his first two years, making his junior season one to anticipate.

Demetrius Cavitt Jr
Cavitt Jr. is a middle linebacker with excellent size. He has an explosive first step with excellent acceleration that gets him into the position to cause disruption in the backfield. His ability to change direction flashes impressive athleticism. He does an excellent job initiating contact and securing tackles to finish plays. Cavitt Jr’s varsity experience gives him the ability to enter his junior season with a sharpened set of skills and the potential to be a sleeper prospect.
