In high school football, a good team can always run the ball at will. Having a guy in the backfield that can find the gaps and exploit them for big gains can be the difference in winning and losing games. It is also a huge wildcard to have a guy that can either add an extra blocker, or be a very reliable target out of the backfield. Here are my Top 6 remaining uncommitted RB’s in my opinion.
Gavin Ross Gavin Ross 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Harrisburg | 2023 State – Harrisburg, Highlights
Ross was one of those backs that received a good chunk of snaps as a Sophomore and was vital in the backfield as a Junior. Unfortunately, he missed most of his Senior season due to injury, which is a big reason why he is still uncommitted. Ross was kid that could hurt you with speed, or power. He was patient behind blocks and really hit the gap hard. His balance and strength helped him break through the arm tackles. Ross fit the mold of a good blocker for the QB and a good target on screens. He was a good spark for the offense.
Nelson Wright Nelson Wright 5'9" | 200 lbs | RB Sioux Falls Jefferson | 2023 State – Sioux Falls Jefferson, Highlights
I watched Wright in the State Championship game this year. I’d describe him as a Jimmy John’s RB, freaky fast. He broke off a big run late and dusted every defender on the field. His acceleration was so smooth and quick that if the defenders didn’t take a good angle, he was gone. I liked seeing his vision work and his quick cuts to the open field to break the big plays. His strength really showed in his stiff-arms on the defenders diving at him. He also added a vital blocking piece in the pass game for the offense as well.
Tate Hoffman Tate Hoffman 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Miller/Highmore/Harrold | 2023 State – Miller/Highmore/Harrold, Highlights
Hoffman is another kid I’ve followed for a couple years. He became the playmaker for the offense, playing many positions on the offensive side. His speed and agility made him extremely difficult to corral in open space. Hoffman split out wide and became a favorite deep threat in the pass game, showing his speed and hands. He showed his awareness and football IQ on both sides of the ball, especially when picking up blitzes and blocking for the QB. Lastly, on film he showed himself passing, running and catching the football, doing all of those things well.
Sam Fischer Sam Fischer 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Rapid City Christian | 2023 State – Rapid City Christian, Highlights
Fischer was a guy that exploded into the spotlight as a Junior and Senior. A kid that seemed to carry a workload for the offensive unit, especially running the ball. His patience played a good role in finding the gaps. I liked his speed when attacking the gaps as they opened up. Another thing that stood out on tape was his physicality when running the ball. I liked how he’d run full speed into a couple defenders and getting as many yards as he could after contact. The last big factor I liked on tape was versatility. He took snaps in the backfield as RB and QB, running or throwing the ball. Also splitting out wide and being a reliable target as well.
Riley Orel Riley Orel RB Winner | 2023 State – Winner, Highlights
Orel is a three year starter for the powerhouse Winner Warriors. The rushing attack was a big reason why they are a power attack, and Orel was in the mix all three years. Each year he was in the backfield, he made his name a bigger threat throughout the State. I like his strength, patience, and breakaway speed. When he would get out to the perimeter, the blocks developed and he attacked the gaps, no matter how big or small. His strength ran through many defenders and his speed broke loose for a big play. The strength also doubled over into being a good lead blocker for his teammates. Lastly, his ‘it’ factor was his motor to run hard through the whistle, whether he had the ball or not.
Lincon Wiseman Lincon Wiseman RB Mandan | 2023 State – Mandan, Highlights
Wiseman is a defense’s nightmare. Even if you scheme up their offense perfectly, he will find a way to ruin it. He moves well laterally, but one cut to get him North-and-South, he’s gone. Combining the speed, agility, and vision, he is nearly impossible to corral and keep from turning nothing into six points. His breakaway speed would also put him in the Jimmy Johns category of freaky fast. He is another back that fits the mold of a well-rounded RB. His reliability as a pass catcher gives the defense another reason to know where he is at all times. Lastly, his motor, he will blocks extremely well on plays he doesn’t go out for a pass and will pancake the defender.
