The [player_tooltip player_id='139521' first='Evan' last='Wysong'] we watched week after week during the fall in high school, as dynamic a player as he was, is no more.

Wysong spent two years as the starting quarterback for powerhouse Rio Rancho (NM) Cleveland, finishing with a record of 24-2 as the Storm won back-to-back Class 6A (Big School) state championships.

During that time, Wysong threw for nearly 4,000 yards and rushed for 2,300 more, earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the state of New Mexico.

But last Saturday's epic 75-61 victory over La Cueva in the 6A title game at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque marked the final time Wysong will likely ever play quarterback.

“I've officially retired from being a quarterback,” Wysong said Tuesday. “I won't have to throw the ball anymore. Now I'll be running routes and running in the backfield and catching pitches, things like that. But I'm very excited for the opportunity. I'm glad the Lobo coaches took a chance on me.

When Wysong officially joins the New Mexico program next summer, he'll switch to slot receiver and play alongside older brother Luke, who led the Lobos in receptions for the second straight season (34 catches in 2022) as a sophomore.

“Just being able to play at the next level means everything to me,” Wysong said. “Playing D1 football is something I've worked for ever since I was four years old. My speed and being able to run fast has carried me through. Being able to play with my brother once again (is great). I've always loved playing sports with my brother.”

Wysong said Montana, Montana State and Wyoming expressed interest during the recruiting process but he quickly pounced when UNM offered.

When Wysong becomes a Lobo, he'll be joined by Cleveland WR [player_tooltip player_id='139523' first='Nic' last='Trujillo'], who committed to UNM last summer after excelling on the camp circuit and showcasing his sub-4.5 speed in the 40.

“I met him in seventh grade and we've been best friends since,” Wysong said. “It was a great feeling to go out with Him one last time and now being able to go to UNM with him and play receiver with him is a great deal.”

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Trujillo had 53 receptions for 1,132 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior in 2022 to help spark the Storm to a third consecutive Class 6A state title. He finished his two-year varsity career at Cleveland with 104 receptions for 2,038 yards and 30 TD.

UNM coaches hope Trujillo can put up similar numbers beginning in 2023 and help ignite a stagnant Lobo passing attack.

“I want to help bring the fans back and make everybody excited to watch UNM football again,” Trujillo said. “I'm glad I have an opportunity to keep playing the game I've loved since I was little.”

Trujillo said he, Wysong and QB commit [player_tooltip player_id='137862' first='Aidan' last='Armenta'] from La Cueva High in Albuquerque will work out together in the winter and spring to get ready for the day when they officially join the Lobos program in time for summer workouts.

https://twitter.com/VSportraits/status/1598329364864593920

https://twitter.com/CHSStormFB/status/1598372760262262786

https://twitter.com/CHSStormFB/status/1598118917301731328

https://twitter.com/WysongEvan/status/1597025473300598785

https://twitter.com/CHSStormFB/status/1596678831586566146
