Viliamu-Asa may be the top player in the 2024 class when Prep Redzone reexamines the rankings. Coach Jason Negro told me a year ago that he is one of the best players he has ever coached.
He really showcased his sideline-to-sideline speed in the championship game against Mater Dei. He led the team in tackles and tackles for a loss.
Viliamu-Asa read the offensive line well and was in the backfield frequently on inside runs and pass plays. He also had some of the hardest hits of the game.
Speaking of sideline-to-sideline speed, Bryant showcased that ability, particularly early in the game.
There was a play where the Mater Dei quarterback was scrambling and Bryant came from the opposite side of the field to tackle him in the backfield and prevent a big play.
He does a great job setting the edge on run plays and forcing backs to cut inside where all the defenders are. Bryant also does a nice job in most pass coverages. He should be a guy who plays early at Washington next year.
Williams was playing with a leg injury and we were not positive we would see him.
He did a very solid job in man coverage early in the game and showed he can fly up the field to stop the run.
Bosco trusted him in man coverage and he often delivered with good timing on his pass break ups.
Bosco’s interior of the defensive line did a nice job eating up double teams to let its linebackers fill gaps in the run game.
Hansen was the best at this and was facing tough competition in Mater Dei’s offensive line.
He also gave an inspiring pregame speech and picked up an offer from San Jose State after the game.
MATER DEI
Mater Dei replaced Stanford edge rusher David Bailey with a younger version of him in Wyatt.
The few times that Mater Dei was able to pressure Bosco in the passing game, Wyatt was generating the pressure from the right side.
He is so efficient in his movements and doesn’t waste any steps. He has great upper body strength for a sophomore and can engage with big tackles when he has to.
If you ask coach Bruce Rollinson who the best defensive player is on Mater Dei he will tell you it’s Sua.
Mater Dei largely shut down the Bosco running game and Sua was picking up a lot of tackles inside the box.
He is one of the best tacklers in the class and is the captain of the defense. He is solid in pass coverage and the good kind of aggressive that will bury you until the whistle blows.
Breland and Semi Tualanga did a nice job plugging up the middle for the Mater Dei defense.
His power pass rushing moves are great and he uses his long arms to control the shoulders of the offensive lineman.
It’s easy to see why colleges love him and it’s scary to think he has another year in the weight room before committing.
