Lake County specifically always has a few prospects who are capable of playing at the next level but for some reason slip through the cracks. My intention with this article is to go in between those cracks and highlight some of these diamonds in the rough.
So without further ado, let’s get to know five class of ’23 prospects that need to be on your radar.
Donohue first popped on my radar a couple years ago during week 1 of the shortened COVID season. He was a sophomore making his first start on varsity and ended up finishing the game with 7 touchdown passes. After that game I had a pretty good feeling that Donohue would cement himself as one of Lake County’s top 2023 prospects. He finished his senior year with 2,039 passing yards and 29 total touchdowns along with being named Grayslake North’s all-time leader in passing yards, completions, and touchdowns. He possesses all the necessary tools to develop into a starting quarterback at the next level. Has above-average footwork and pocket presence and has an overall great feel for the position. An accurate thrower of the football with a very talented arm. One of his more underrated qualities is his ability to break the pocket; he’s a good enough runner to the point where the defense has to account for him when he begins to scramble.

Choi is a patient runner who moves well laterally and also has good inside-outside vision. He’s a slippery runner who’s physical enough to run it up the gut and has the speed to attack the edges and rip off long gains. He’s also a more-than-reliable receiving threat out of the backfield which only adds to his value as a prospect.

Burkley’s contributions on the defensive side of the ball had a lot to do with Lake Zurich’s defense allowing only 73 total points during the regular season. Burkley finished his senior season with 79 tackles, 4 ints, 2 FR, and 1 TD, but even those numbers can’t quantify his impact on the field. His versatility at the linebacker position is what separates him from most. He has good play recognition and can stuff the run with the best of them. His combination of size and athleticism enables him to excel in rushing the quarterback and he is more-than-reliable when dropping back in coverage. Burkley is essentially a complete linebacker who should be able to immediately help a team at the next level.

Callahan is without a doubt one of the most explosive athletes in Illinois’ class of 2023. Possesses game-breaking speed that can erase a defenders’ angle in an instant. He’s a unique prospect because he has the ability to affect all three phases of the game. He’s an elite return specialist who’s a scoring threat almost any time the ball is kicked to him. On offense he’s so dynamic that all you really have to do is find a way to get him in space and the ball in his hands. He’s just as valuable on defense because he can run with just about any receiver, has great instincts, and displays great range to cover the field from sideline-to-sideline.
Hunter Del Re
Hunter Del Re
Del Re immediately passes the eye test in terms of what teams are looking for in a modern day tight end. He’s 6’4″, athletic, and is a willing blocker. Del Re’s size allows him to create space in the intermediate passing attack and serve as a security blanket for his quarterback. Has good hands for a tight end, catches the ball well in traffic and can be a big-time red zone threat.
