This team has been extremely competitive and has had great athletes come through its halls including Saints Linebacker Demario Davis and Eagles QB Gardner Minshew. Here are a few more athletes that one should make note of.
Landon Varnes Landon Varnes 5’11” | 170 lbs | QB Brandon | 2024 State MS has been exceptional for the Bulldogs. He is an excellent game manager and can hit the open receiver in stride. Varnes has been Brandon’s designated signal caller for the past two seasons and done so with great production. In both seasons Landon threw for over 2,500 yards and led the team to winning seasons. Each season Landon Varnes Landon Varnes 5’11” | 170 lbs | QB Brandon | 2024 State MS has been improving and will be looking to lead the Bulldogs to yet another winning season.
Nate Blount is a beast of a running back. Blount rushed for over 2,000 yards this season with the bulldogs and was one of the main ball carriers for coach Sam Williams. Blount averaged over 140 yards per game and was a consistent back who could break tackles with ease. With 26 TDs to his name he is looking to capitalize on his ability and continue to show what he can do. He will be a great weapon that will be retained into next season.
Quincy Phillips Quincy Phillips 5’8″ | 180 lbs | ATH Brandon | 2025 State MS Jr is a running back by trade however he also showed that he has excellent hands. Phillips was the team’s second leading receiver with over 790 yards. Additionally Quincy’s versatility allowed for him to carry the ball for another 210 yards. This athlete is certainly one that will demand attention as he still has a couple more years to play and can be used in various manners. This type of athlete really helps an offensive coordinator when it comes to play calling as he is explosive with the ball in his hands. Therefore all one needs to do is feed him the ball.
Jaeden Calendar
Jaeden Calendar
Jaeden Calender is a next level athlete with immense potential. He has excellent size, can play multiple positions and most of all he has speed. At 6-1 225 and a 4.5 40 yard dash time he is an athlete that fits the mold for what D1 programs are looking for. Calender was one of the Bulldog’s best defensive athletes who consistently got into the opponent’s backfield to make a play with 23 tackles for loss. Jaeden finished the season with 155 tackles, 8 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and over 11 tackles per game. He is nearly unstoppable and will be a great cornerstone as the Bulldogs defense looks to field a defense that is just as distinguished.
Conclusion
These athletes will be formative to the program’s success in 2024. The Bulldogs will remain mostly intact on offense as most of their offensive playmakers won’t graduate this season. The defense however will need to really coach the next man up. Many of the team’s top tacklers will be lost to graduation this season. Nevertheless, I am certain that this coaching staff can field an excellent team come the fall of 2024. What else is certain is that the previously mentioned athletes are going to have great seasons and continue to demand attention from top-tier college programs!
