PLAYOFF WEEK 2. The Stakes Rise Again
In this article:
After four days of action, the first round of the state playoffs came to an end on Monday night.
Because of Hurricane Nicole, the schedule was tossed around and many times had to wait three extra days to see if they advanced or watched the 2022 season come to an end.
While many favorites escaped the opening round, there were others were upset and will have a long off season to ponder what happened.
Here is a look at the Top 25 plus all the other teams who advanced to this week’s second round:
1. Miami Central (2M, 10-0). THIS WEEK: No. 4 seed Miami Northwestern (6-4.) NEXT GAME: The winner of No. 3 Miami Norland and No. 2 Miami Booker T. Washington (9-2). LAST WEEK: The Rockets crushed No. 8 seed Miami St. Brendan 60-0.
2. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1M, 8-0). THIS WEEK: No. 4 seed Hollywood Avant Garde in the opening round of the state playoffs. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the No. 3 North Palm Beach Benjamin (5-4) and No. 2 West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (10-0). LAST WEEK: The Lions were off during the first week.
3. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (3M, 11-0). THIS WEEK: The Raiders will play host to No. 4 Delray Beach Atlantic. NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 3 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (10-0) and No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Dillard (7-4) contest. LAST WEEK: The Raiders opened the state playoffs with a 59-14 win against No. 8 Coconut Creek.
4. Bradenton IMG Academy (Independent, 7-1). THIS WEEK: The Ascenders will be face off against national power St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. NEXT GAME: Season is over. LAST WEEK: They were off.
5. Lakeland (4S, 10-0). THIS WEEK: At home against No. 5 New Port Richey Mitchell (8-3). NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 6 Winter Haven (8-3) and No. 2 Lake Minneola (9-1). LAST WEEK: A first round state playoff win against rival Lakeland Lake Gibson, 49-0.
6. Plantation American Heritage (2M, 9-1). THIS WEEK: No. 4 Boynton Beach (9-2) at home. NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 3 Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (8-2) and No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (10-1). LAST WEEK: The Patriots continued to roll with a 43-7 win against Riviera Beach Inlet Grove.
7. Orlando Edgewater (3M, 11-0). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 5 Tampa Bay Tech (9-2). NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 3 Oviedo (10-1) and No. 2 Orlando Jones (9-2) matchup. LAST WEEK: The Eagles beat No. 8 Jacksonville First Coast, 57-6.
8. Miami Christopher Columbus (4M, 10-1). THIS WEEK: A rematch with area rival No. 4 Miami Palmetto (6-5). NEXT GAME: The winner of No. 3 Doral Academy (7-4) and No. 2 Davie Western (7-3). LAST WEEK: The Explorers beat No. 8 Miami High, 63-0.
9. Tampa Bay Tech (3M, 9-2). THIS WEEK: It’s a road game against No. 1 seed Orlando Edgewater (11-0). NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 3 Oviedo (10-1) and No. 2 Orlando Jones (9-2) matchup. LAST WEEK: The Titans beat No. 4 Neptune Beach Fletcher, 34-3
10. Jacksonville Trinity Christian (1M, 10-0). NEXT WEEK: At home against No. 4 Orlando Christian Prep (6-4). NEXT GAME: A state semifinal contest against the winner of No. 3 Orlando The First Academy (8-2) and No. 2 Jacksonville University Christian (9-1). LAST WEEK: The Conquerors were off in the first week of the state playoffs.
11. Pensacola Pine Forest (3S, 10-0). THIS WEEK: A region semifinal contest against No. 5 Fort Walton Beach Choctawhatchee (6-5) at home. NEXT GAME: The winner of No. 3 Lake City Columbia (7-3) and No. 2 Pensacola Escambia (8-3). LAST WEEK: The Eagles opened with a 35-15 win against No. 8 Tallahassee Rickards.
12. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2M, 10-1). THIS WEEK: A home game rematch against No. 3 Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (8-2). NEXT GAME: No. 4 Boynton Beach (9-2) and No. 1 Plantation American Heritage (10-1). LAST WEEK: The two-time defending state champions opened the state playoffs with a 45-0 win against No. 7 Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest.
13. St. John’s Bartram Trail (4S, 11-0). THIS WEEK: A rematch at home against No. 4 St. John’s Creekside (9-2). NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 7 Crestview (7-4) and No. 3 Gainesville Buchholz (8-2). LAST WEEK: The Bears opened up the state playoffs with a convincing 50-20 win against No. 8 Flagler Palm Coast.
14. Orlando Jones (3M, 8-2). THIS WEEK: As a No. 2 seed they will play host to No. 7 seed Apopka Wekiva.The winner of No. 3 Oviedo and No. 6 Tampa Wharton. NEXT GAME: The winner of this game will get either No. 5 Tampa Bay Tech (9-2) or No. 1 Orlando Edgewater (11-0). LAST WEEK:
15. Winter Park (4M, 10-1). THIS WEEK: A big local road game at No. 2 Apopka. NEXT GAME: The winner of theNo. 4 Lake Mary (7-3) at No. 1 Sanford Seminole (9-2). LAST WEEK: The Wildcats looked impressive with a 31-0 win against Altamonte Springs Lake Brantley.
16. West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (1M, 10-0). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 3 North Palm Beach Benjamin (5-4). NEXT GAME: Against No. 4 Hollywood Avant Garde (6-3) and No. 1 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (8-0). LAST WEEK: The Crusaders were off in the opening week.
17. Lake Wales (3S, 11-0). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 4 Ocala Vanguard (8-3) NEXT GAME: The winner of No. 7 Lecanto (8-3) and No. 3 Zephyrhills (8-3). LAST WEEK: The Highlanders opened with a 34-10 win against No. 8 Auburndale.

22. Cocoa (2S, 6-4). THIS WEEK: Another home game against No. 3 Melbourne Palm Bay (8-3). NEXT GAME: The winner of this contest will either get No. 4 Hudson (9-2) or No. 1 Bushnell South Sumter (11-0). LAST WEEK: The Tigers opened up with a 52-6 win against Dunnellon.
23. Rockledge (3S, 9-2). THIS WEEK: The No. 1 seed Raiders will be at home against No. 4 Daytona Beach Mainland (7-3). NEXT GAME: The winner of this game will play either No. 3 Sebring (8-2) at No. 2 Jensen Beach (9-2). LAST WEEK: The Raiders edged No. 8 Satellite, 13-12.
24. Tallahassee FSU High (11-0, 2S). THIS WEEK: The No. 1 Seminoles will be at home against No. 4 Pensacola Catholic (10-1). THIS WEEK: The suddenly read-hot Blue Darters – as a No. 2 seed – will be at home against No. 3 Winter Park (10-1), NEXT GAME: The winner of this game will get either No. 4 Lake Mary (7-3) or No. 1 Sanford Seminole (9-2).
