The entire WCAC community witnessed one of the upsets of the year in high school football when St. John's topped Good Counsel in the WCAC playoffs. While St. John's is the reigning WCAC champion, this Good Counsel team was considered a conference juggernaut this season and a top two team in the state. Let's take a closer look at how the Cadets pulled off this miraculous upset in the WCAC semifinals.

[player_tooltip player_id='372517' first='Isaiah' last='French'] threw multiple touchdown passes in St. Johns' upset victory over Good Counsel, and his elite play was infectious to his teammates in this game. The Sophomore pass thrower was phenomenal on third down, and he even converted a few of them with his legs which also demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities. [player_tooltip player_id='372517' first='Isaiah' last='French']'s performance was absolutely crucial to the Cadets' upset, and his chemistry with Senior pass catcher [player_tooltip player_id='247536' first='Sean' last='Williams'] was nothing short of spectacular. This dynamic quarterback-receiver duo must be pumping on all cylinders against DeMatha is they're going to pull-off another upset this weekend. However, if any tandem is capable of doing so, it's clearly the tandem of [player_tooltip player_id='372517' first='Isaiah' last='French'] and [player_tooltip player_id='247536' first='Sean' last='Williams'].

[player_tooltip player_id='247536' first='Sean' last='Williams'] delivered a unanimous player of the game performance in this contest. The UMD commit scored both touchdowns for the Cadets, and he hauled in one of those scores for a 74 yard touchdown catch. [player_tooltip player_id='247536' first='Sean' last='Williams']' ability to gain yardage after contact was on full display against Good Counsel, and it was truly amazing to watch as he weaved between and juked defenders. He will need to play at least a solid game against DeMatha if the Cadets are going to pull-off yet another upset victory, however, I wouldn't be surprised at all considering Williams' receiving prowess.

2024 5'11 175 RB - Da'Jaun Riggs - St. John's

Da'Jaun Riggs' productivity this season was a forerunner for the Cadets in 2022. His consistent play from beginning to end this Fall has been nothing short of amazing, and Riggs absolutely deserves a lot of credit for shining bright on the field each and every game. Last week's playoff victory versus Good Counsel was no different, and Riggs saw a lot of production which included a completed pass for a first down on a trick play. If Da'Jaun Riggs puts up solid rushing numbers against DeMatha then there's no doubt in my mind that this championship game will be closely contested late down the stretch. Riggs and the Cadets face DeMatha this Sunday for the WCAC Championship at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

2023 6'1 185 DB - Trent Brown - St. John's

Trent Brown secured the game sealing interception in this playoff bout, and he made a highlight reel catch to get the job done. The entire defensive secondary for the Cadets was lockdown in this contest, but Trent Brown would be my choice for defensive player of the game. His web gem catch sent them to the championship, and it eliminated any possible way that the Falcons could win the game. Trent Brown and the entire St. John's defense will look to continue their elite play this Sunday in the WCAC Championship versus DeMatha at the U.S. Naval Academy.

2024 6'1 205 LB - [player_tooltip player_id='172814' first='Montay' last='Weedon'] - St. John's

Another very worthy candidate for defensive player of the game from this contest is most certainly [player_tooltip player_id='172814' first='Montay' last='Weedon']. In my opinion, Weedon could have been a defensive player of the game nominee in essentially every game this year. Weedon forced a turnover against Good Counsel, and he made tackle after tackle at the linebacker position. Weedon reads offensive schemes and quarterback body language better than 99% of linebackers at the high school level, and it is truly mesmerizing to watch him work in real time. [player_tooltip player_id='172814' first='Montay' last='Weedon'], #44, should be on everyone's radar during the championship game this Sunday, and there's zero doubt in my mind that, win or lose, he will put on a highlight reel performance.
